Position Overview

NAFSA: Association of International Educators stands as the premier organization dedicated to the advancement of international education and exchange. Our mission encompasses providing professional development, promoting research, and facilitating collaborative dialogues.

The Public Policy division, which encompasses grassroots advocacy and media relations, spearheads NAFSA's initiatives to champion policies that enhance the exchange of ideas, establish a sensible immigration framework, and promote global engagement. This internship is tailored for students aspiring to build careers in public policy, government relations, advocacy, media relations, or international education, offering a valuable experience within a nonprofit environment.

Internship Responsibilities:

  • Assist in gathering and disseminating international education success narratives, highlighting impactful international students and scholars, as well as U.S. study abroad participants.
  • Support NAFSA's involvement with the U.S. for Success Coalition through research, writing, and administrative tasks.
  • Utilize a congressional management system to monitor outreach and positive actions by congressional members.
  • Conduct research and provide reports on legislation and regulations pertinent to international education.
  • Participate in meetings, briefings, and hearings on Capitol Hill, whether virtually or in person.
  • Help prepare and distribute press releases and official statements.
  • Contribute written content for NAFSA's blog, social media platforms, and member communications.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of events, such as briefings on Capitol Hill or those related to the annual conference.
  • Compile and evaluate significant media coverage relevant to NAFSA's initiatives, focusing on international education, higher education, immigration, and foreign policy issues.

Compensation: $17.50/hour for up to 20 hours per week, with potential for prorated holiday and retirement benefits, if eligible.

Candidate Profile: The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, self-motivated, and proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word. Experience in customer service, familiarity with Zoom and social media platforms, and strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills are essential. Preferred candidates will possess a keen interest in public policy, U.S. government and politics, immigration, or international relations, along with relevant experience on Capitol Hill or in similar environments.

To qualify, candidates must demonstrate authorization to work in the U.S. without requiring sponsorship from NAFSA. We welcome students with valid work authorization, including those seeking experiential learning through curricular practical training (CPT), optional practical training (OPT), or academic training eligibility.
