Lead Engineer for Aerospace Ceramic Composites

San Francisco, California, United States GE Aviation Full time
Job Overview This position is part of the Commercial Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) Mechanical Design team within GE Aviation's Engineering Division. The team focuses on the design and development of CMC components utilized in the High-Pressure-Turbine (HPT) and Combustor Module of advanced Commercial Turbofan engines.

As the Advanced Lead Engineer, you will be instrumental in guiding and supporting initiatives aimed at enhancing durability and fleet performance for CMC HPT components. Your role will involve driving design and manufacturing improvements to align with program specifications, while collaborating with diverse teams, including mechanical design, materials engineering, data science, manufacturing, quality assurance, and program management. You will integrate lessons learned from previous projects and new fleet insights into the ongoing development of component designs. Additional responsibilities may encompass supporting component delivery efforts, assisting with engine test assemblies, and enhancing component manufacturability through design and process optimizations.

Your technical acumen will be vital in refining existing processes and designs, while also providing mentorship to less experienced engineers and manufacturing personnel. This role offers a significant degree of autonomy, requiring you to take ownership of your work quality and contribute to establishing your priorities. While performing your duties, you will need to evaluate your capabilities and seek guidance from supervisors and technical mentors as needed.

This position presents an exciting opportunity to significantly influence the design and innovation of GE Aviation's product offerings. Key Responsibilities

Essential Duties

  • Acquire comprehensive knowledge of hot section design, CMC engineering, and module integration. Understand how your team's work contributes to current and future commercial programs and the CMC Integrated Product Team (IPT). Stay informed about market trends, competitive landscape, and product differentiation.
  • Exercise sound judgment and propose innovative solutions to address design and manufacturing challenges. Utilize on-the-job training and prior experience to resolve tasks. Access necessary technical skills and analytical thinking to tackle problems. Collaborate with various internal resources beyond your immediate team to make informed decisions.
  • Oversee project plans and action items for achieving component durability maturation goals. Lead small teams to ensure deliverables are met. Communicate project timelines and delegate tasks effectively.
  • Define engineering requirements for manufacturing, taking into account manufacturing capabilities. Develop corrective actions for manufacturing discrepancies, weighing the pros and cons of altering manufacturing processes versus establishing sound engineering justifications. Leverage fleet learnings, component testing history, and comparative analysis to determine the best corrective action approach.
  • Communicate technical challenges and requirements to other teams. Utilize historical documentation of engine test results and fleet performance, design methodologies, and innovative analyses to drive substantial engineering modifications. Gather feedback from peers and technical experts, documenting significant findings with technical rigor.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related STEM discipline from an accredited institution and 6+ years of relevant engineering experience, OR an Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related STEM field from an accredited institution and 4+ years of relevant engineering experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership capabilities; experience in influencing and guiding small teams.
  • Excellent communication and technical documentation skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects concurrently with demonstrated project management skills.
  • Effective problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to make informed risk-based decisions.
  • Capability to mentor others in addressing complex challenges.
  • Familiarity with hardware ownership, jet engine design, hot section design, and/or combustor design.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (Unigraphics NX), GD&T, and assembly stack-ups.
  • Prior experience with RCCAs/TOPS8Ds.
  • Experience in composite design and/or manufacturing.
  • Experience with non-conformance review or Material Review Board (MRB) processes.

This role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information. Final offers will be contingent upon the ability to obtain authorization for access to U.S. export-controlled information from the U.S. Government if applicable.
