Senior Engineer for Aerospace Ceramic Composites

San Francisco, California, United States GE Aviation Full time
Job Overview This position is part of the Commercial Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) Mechanical Design team within GE Aviation's Engineering Division. The team is tasked with the design and development of CMC components for the High-Pressure-Turbine (HPT) and Combustor Module of advanced Commercial Turbofan engines.

As the Advanced Lead Engineer, you will be instrumental in leading and supporting initiatives aimed at enhancing durability and fleet support for CMC HPT components. Your role will involve driving design and manufacturing modifications to align with program specifications, while collaborating with cross-functional teams, including mechanical design, materials engineering, data science, manufacturing, quality assurance, and program management. You will integrate lessons learned from previous programs and new fleet insights into subsequent iterations of component design. Additional responsibilities may include supporting component delivery efforts, assisting with engine test assemblies, and enhancing component manufacturability through design and process improvements.

Your technical expertise will be vital in refining existing processes and designs, while also providing mentorship to junior engineers in both engineering and manufacturing disciplines. This role offers a significant degree of autonomy, requiring you to take ownership of your work quality and contribute to setting your priorities. While executing your tasks, you will need to evaluate your capabilities and seek guidance from your supervisor and technical mentors as needed.

This position presents an exciting opportunity to make a substantial impact on the design and innovation of GE Aviation's products. Key Responsibilities

Essential Duties

  • Acquire comprehensive knowledge of hot section design, CMC design, and module integration. Understand how your team's work contributes to current and future commercial programs and the CMC Integrated Product Team (IPT). Stay informed about market trends, competition, and product differentiation.
  • Utilize sound judgment and propose innovative solutions to address design and manufacturing challenges. Apply on-the-job training and previous experience to resolve tasks effectively. Access technical skills and analytical thinking necessary for problem-solving. Collaborate with various internal sources to make informed decisions.
  • Oversee project plans and action items to achieve component durability maturation goals. Lead small teams to ensure deliverables are met. Communicate scheduling pressures and delegate tasks appropriately.
  • Define engineering requirements for manufacturing while considering manufacturing capabilities. Develop corrective actions for manufacturing discrepancies, weighing the pros and cons of altering manufacturing processes against sound engineering justification. Leverage fleet learnings, component testing history, and comparative analysis to determine the best corrective action approach.
  • Communicate technical challenges and requirements to other teams. Utilize historical documentation of engine test results and fleet performance, design practices, and innovative analysis to drive effective engineering changes. Gather feedback from peers and technical experts, documenting significant findings with technical rigor.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related STEM field from an accredited institution and 6+ years of relevant engineering experience, OR an Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related STEM field from an accredited institution and 4+ years of relevant engineering experience.

  • Ability to mentor others in resolving complex engineering challenges.
  • Familiarity with hardware ownership, jet engines, hot section design, and/or combustor design.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (Unigraphics NX), GD&T, and assembly stack-ups.
  • Prior experience with RCCAs/TOPS8Ds.
  • Experience in composite design and/or manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of non-conformance review or Material Review Board (MRB) processes.

This role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information. Final offers will be contingent upon the ability to obtain authorization for access to U.S. export-controlled information from the U.S. Government, if applicable.
