San Francisco, California, United States GE Aviation Full time
Job Overview This position is part of the Commercial Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) Mechanical Design team within GE Aviation's Engineering Division. The team is tasked with the design and advancement of CMC components utilized in the High-Pressure-Turbine (HPT) and Combustor Module of the GE9X and LEAP Commercial Turbofan engines.

As the Advanced Lead Engineer, you will be instrumental in spearheading and supporting initiatives aimed at enhancing durability and fleet performance for CMC HPT components. Your role will involve individual contributions to drive design and manufacturing improvements that align with program specifications, while also coordinating with cross-functional teams encompassing mechanical design, analysis, materials engineering, data science, manufacturing, quality assurance, and program management. You will be expected to integrate lessons learned from previous programs and new fleet insights into subsequent iterations of component design. Additional responsibilities may include aiding in component delivery efforts, assisting with engine test assemblies, and enhancing component manufacturability through design and process modifications.

Your technical acumen will be vital in refining existing processes and designs, while also providing guidance to early-career engineers and manufacturing personnel. This role offers a significant degree of autonomy, necessitating ownership of the quality of your output and active participation in prioritizing your tasks. While executing your responsibilities, you will need to evaluate your capabilities and seek advice from your supervisor and technical mentors when required.

This position presents an exciting opportunity to significantly influence the design and innovation of GE Aviation's products. Key Responsibilities

Essential Duties

  • Acquire comprehensive knowledge of hot section design, CMC design, and module integration. Understand how your team's efforts contribute to our commercial initiatives, future projects, and the CMC Integrated Product Team (IPT). Stay informed about market trends, competitive landscape, and product differentiation.
  • Exercise sound judgment and propose innovative solutions to address design and manufacturing challenges. Utilize on-the-job training and prior experience to tackle tasks effectively. Access technical skills and analytical thinking necessary for problem-solving. Collaborate with various internal resources beyond your immediate team to reach informed decisions.
  • Oversee project plans and action items for achieving component durability maturation goals. Lead small teams to ensure timely completion of deliverables. Communicate scheduling pressures and delegate tasks as needed.
  • Define engineering requirements for manufacturing while considering production capabilities. Develop corrective measures for manufacturing discrepancies, weighing the pros and cons of altering manufacturing processes versus establishing sound engineering justifications. Leverage fleet insights, component testing history, and comparative analysis to inform corrective action strategies.
  • Articulate technical challenges and requirements to other teams. Utilize historical documentation of engine test outcomes and fleet performance, design methodologies, and innovative analyses to drive meaningful engineering changes. Gather feedback from peers and technical experts, documenting significant findings with technical rigor.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related STEM discipline from an accredited institution, along with 6+ years of relevant engineering experience, OR an advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related STEM field from an accredited university and 4+ years of relevant engineering experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership capabilities; experience in influencing and guiding small teams.
  • Exceptional communication and technical documentation skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects concurrently with demonstrated project management proficiency.
  • Effective problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to make informed risk-based decisions.
  • Capacity to mentor others in resolving complex challenges.
  • Familiarity with hardware ownership, jet engines, hot section design, and/or combustor design.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (Unigraphics NX), GD&T, and assembly stack-ups.
  • Prior experience with RCCAs/TOPS8Ds.
  • Background in composite design and/or manufacturing.
  • Experience with non-conformance review or Material Review Board (MRB) processes.

This role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information. Final offers will be contingent upon the ability to obtain authorization for access to U.S. export-controlled information from the U.S. Government, if applicable.
