As a Senior Applied Scientist specializing in Autonomous Systems Assessment, your role will involve crafting the most advanced evaluation frameworks for autonomous vehicle driving capabilities, aiming to achieve and sustain superhuman performance across various metrics. You will lead impactful projects that tackle the real-world challenges faced by our autonomous vehicles on city streets—issues that often lack standard solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

In your capacity as a technical leader, you will showcase your leadership skills by:

  • Establishing success metrics from vague problem definitions.
  • Formulating evaluation strategies and timelines, overseeing the development, monitoring, and analysis of safety, operational, and compliance metrics for core autonomous functionalities.
  • Guaranteeing thorough validation of autonomous vehicle performance using high-fidelity data.
  • Enhancing testing and road monitoring processes in collaboration with autonomous vehicle engineers to create a rapid feedback loop for model development.
  • Guiding and mentoring fellow data scientists while promoting a collaborative and positive work environment.
  • Exemplifying a constructive, humble, and growth-oriented mindset.
As an individual contributor, your responsibilities will include:
  • Developing high-quality data extraction tools and metrics that support testing, road monitoring, and model training.
  • Evaluating autonomous vehicle performance data to uncover insights and optimization opportunities.
  • Creating innovative methodologies, such as machine learning techniques, to enhance the quality of metrics at scale.
  • Testing and implementing your methodologies within our simulation frameworks.
  • Collaborating with software engineers, systems engineers, test engineers, product management, and other stakeholders to develop shareable tools, methodologies, and dashboards.
  • Translating insights into actionable recommendations for software development and readiness for launch, and effectively communicating these findings to partners and leadership.
Qualifications:
  • A Master's or PhD degree or equivalent experience in Robotics, Transportation, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, or a related field.
  • Over 5 years of post-academic experience in evaluating large models, data science, machine learning, or a closely related discipline.
  • A strong foundation in software engineering and proficiency in coding best practices within production environments.
  • Expertise in SQL and Python.
  • Experience in designing, training, and critically assessing machine learning models for large datasets.
  • Solid statistical knowledge, including familiarity with hypothesis testing, statistical power, and common data biases.
  • Experience in designing, developing, and maintaining automated reporting tools for management and stakeholders.
  • Innovative, resourceful, and passionate about finding new solutions to challenges and opportunities.
  • A proven track record of leading cross-functional initiatives and collaborating with engineering and product teams.
  • At least 3 years of experience mentoring other data scientists.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in the autonomous driving sector.
  • Proficiency in C++.
Compensation:
The salary range for this position is competitive and will vary based on location, relevant knowledge, skills, and experience. Additional compensation may include bonuses, long-term incentives, and comprehensive benefits.
