Role ResponsibilitiesAs the Senior Manager for the AI Applied Science division at DocuSign, you will spearhead a dedicated team of applied scientists, establishing benchmarks for technical excellence in the realms of Applied Science and Machine Learning. Your leadership will be pivotal in developing the foundational AI/ML capabilities and models that drive our innovative Intelligent Agreement Management (IAM) platform.
Your role will encompass mentoring and guiding the Applied Scientists, employing cutting-edge machine learning methodologies for natural language processing to enhance the drafting, summarization, signing, management, and querying of agreements. The ideal candidate will possess comprehensive experience in the design, development, tuning, and assessment of machine learning solutions, including large language models (LLMs). You will collaborate closely with product and platform teams, playing a crucial role in delivering AI solutions for contract comprehension, information extraction, semantic search, and question answering.
Utilizing your expertise in AI and machine learning, you will help shape our AI strategy and influence senior leadership decisions. Your technical acumen combined with your ability to build and nurture a high-performing ML team will be essential in delivering exceptional AI experiences to our customers across the DocuSign Agreement Platform.
This position involves people management and reports directly to the Director of Machine Learning.

- Serve as a role model and enhance our team culture.
- Provide leadership to achieve our strategic objectives.
- Guide your team in model development, research, and evaluation of both established and emerging NLP/ML/DL methodologies applicable to the contract domain.
- Oversee multiple initiatives, foster cross-team collaboration, and shape the technical roadmap.
- Work closely with Product Management to translate user needs into robust, customer-centric machine learning solutions.
- Develop strategies for implementing state-of-the-art technologies in NLP tasks, including document understanding, entity extraction, and semantic search.
- Offer coaching and leadership in applied science best practices, model interpretability, and dataset enhancements.
- Deliver AI products that exceed customer expectations while maintaining code quality through continuous improvement.
Essential
- Master's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline.
- 8+ years of experience in designing, modeling, deploying, and monitoring machine learning and deep learning solutions.
- 2+ years of experience in managing teams of Applied Scientists or ML Engineers.
- 6+ years of experience with deep neural networks and developing NLP/NLU solutions.
- Hands-on experience with advanced NLP models such as BERT, SentenceBert, and LLMs like GPT, Gemini, and Llama.
- Proficiency in programming with Python, PyTorch, TensorFlow, spaCy, scikit-learn, or similar frameworks.
Preferred
- Proven track record of leading geographically diverse teams.
- Familiarity with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and LLM agentic methodologies.
- Experience with computer vision techniques, particularly in document layout analysis and OCR.
- Knowledge of multilingual LLM pretraining or fine-tuning.
- A strong commitment to staying ahead of industry trends and a passion for continuous learning.
Compensation for this role is determined by various factors, including geographic location and may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
In accordance with applicable regulations, the pay ranges for this position in specific locations are as follows:
California: $195,000 - $315,775.00 base salary
Washington and New York (including NYC metro area): $186,000 - $276,125.00 base salary
This position is also eligible for bonuses, equity, and benefits.
