Role Overview

As the Senior Manager for the AI Applied Science division at DocuSign, you will spearhead a dedicated team of applied scientists, establishing benchmarks for technical excellence in the realms of Applied Science and Machine Learning. Your leadership will be pivotal in developing the foundational AI/ML capabilities and models that drive our cutting-edge Intelligent Agreement Management (IAM) platform.

Your responsibilities will include mentoring the Applied Scientists, employing advanced machine learning methodologies for natural language processing to enhance the drafting, summarization, signing, management, and querying of agreements. The ideal candidate will possess comprehensive experience in designing, constructing, fine-tuning, and assessing machine learning solutions, including large language models (LLMs). Collaborating closely with product and platform stakeholders, you will play a crucial role in delivering AI solutions for agreement comprehension, information extraction, semantic search, and question answering.

  • Lead and cultivate a high-performing applied science team, attracting and nurturing exceptional talent.
  • Serve as a role model, fostering a positive team culture.
  • Drive leadership initiatives to achieve strategic objectives.
  • Guide your team in the development, research, testing, and evaluation of innovative NLP/ML/DL methodologies and models applicable to the contract domain, unlocking new use cases for our clients.
  • Oversee multiple projects, facilitating cross-team collaboration, planning, and directing the efforts of applied scientists and ML engineers.
  • Work in tandem with Product Management to translate user needs and product specifications into robust, customer-centric machine learning solutions.
  • Stay abreast of state-of-the-art technologies for NLP tasks, including long document understanding, entity extraction, and semantic search.
  • Provide mentorship in applied science best practices, model evaluation techniques, responsible AI, and dataset enhancements.
  • Deliver AI products that exceed customer expectations while maintaining code quality through continuous improvement.
Qualifications

Essential

  • Master's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline.
  • 8+ years of experience in designing, modeling, deploying, and monitoring machine learning and deep learning systems.
  • 2+ years of experience in managing teams of Applied Scientists or ML Engineers.
  • 6+ years of experience with deep neural networks and developing NLP/NLU solutions.
  • Hands-on experience with contemporary NLP models such as BERT, SentenceBert, and LLMs like GPT, Gemini, and Llama.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, along with frameworks like PyTorch, TensorFlow, spaCy, and scikit-learn.

Desirable

  • Proven experience leading teams across different geographical locations.
  • Familiarity with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and LLM agentic methodologies.
  • Experience in computer vision techniques, particularly in document layout analysis and OCR.
  • Knowledge of multilingual LLM pretraining or fine-tuning.
  • A strong commitment to staying ahead of industry trends and a passion for continuous learning.
Compensation Transparency

Compensation for this role is determined by various factors, including geographic location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Salary ranges for specific locations include:

California: $195,000 - $315,775.00 base salary

Washington and New York (including NYC metro area): $186,000 - $276,125.00 base salary

This position is also eligible for bonuses, equity, and benefits.
