PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:

The Motor Equipment Repairman is responsible for executing repairs and performing preventive maintenance on a variety of MWRA vehicles and machinery. This role is essential in ensuring quality, safety, and operational efficiency to reduce downtime and enhance productivity.

SUPERVISION:

Operates under the general oversight of the Motor Equipment Repairman Foreman.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

No supervisory duties.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts inspections on vehicles and equipment to identify issues and determine necessary repairs, providing recommendations to the foreman.
  • Adjusts, repairs, or overhauls air conditioning systems, brakes, electrical systems, suspension systems, ignition systems, hydraulic systems, and replaces damaged components.
  • Diagnoses issues with vehicles and equipment, including diesel engines and transmissions, and performs necessary repairs.
  • Implements preventive and corrective maintenance on various vehicles and equipment to ensure safety and proper functionality.
  • Regularly greases and changes oil, hydraulic fluids, and coolants in accordance with established procedures and supervisor directives.
  • Executes both general and advanced repairs on heavy-duty trucks and specialized equipment.
  • Responds to roadside assistance calls and performs repairs on-site or in the garage.
  • Conducts safety inspections to ensure vehicles and equipment meet Massachusetts Safety Inspection standards.
  • Records tasks and parts utilized on work orders, along with diagnostic findings, ensuring accuracy in collaboration with the supervisor.
  • Utilizes repair equipment, including strut machines, tire machines, wheel balancing machines, and diagnostic tools.
  • Operates department tow and ramp trucks to transport vehicles and equipment as needed.
  • Suggests necessary supplies for maintenance operations.

Performs related tasks as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; and
  • Four (4) to six (6) years of experience in the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment; or
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Extensive knowledge of methods, tools, materials, and practices used in the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
  • Proficient in the use of computerized and electrical diagnostic tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively use automotive repair tools and equipment.
  • Ability to maintain required certifications.
  • Strong understanding of oral and written instructions.
  • Competent in reading, writing, and mathematical skills.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Massachusetts Class B Commercial Driver's License.
  • Massachusetts Hoisting Operator's License (1C).
  • Current ASE Certification in relevant areas.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

Utilizes various tools including radios, hand-held and motorized tools, computers, diagnostic equipment, and material-handling devices.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical demands of this position require the ability to perform essential functions, with reasonable accommodations available for individuals with disabilities.

Regular activities include using hands for manipulation, standing, walking, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision and depth perception.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This role involves working in various environmental conditions, including exposure to mechanical parts, weather elements, and potential hazards. Noise levels may vary from moderate to loud.
