Position Overview:

Avery Dennison is on the lookout for a skilled Analytical Chemist to be part of the Materials Group North America Innovation Center. This role is situated within the Materials Science and Characterization Analytical team, dedicated to the advancement, optimization, and evaluation of materials technologies on a global scale. The ideal candidate will engage in product performance assessments and material characterization, leveraging their expertise in analytical testing methods to support project teams effectively.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct routine analytical evaluations utilizing various Chromatographic and Spectroscopic techniques (including GPC, HPLC, GC/LC/MS, FTIR, micro-FTIR, Raman, NMR) alongside product performance assessments and prototyping under the guidance of senior technical personnel.
  • Perform regular maintenance and calibration of laboratory instruments.
  • Collaborate with technical teams to execute testing and deliver results for comprehensive analysis.
  • Proactively enhance and refine testing methodologies.
  • Manage timelines for all assigned tasks, ensuring timely completion while balancing multiple requests.
  • Prepare samples and execute tests adhering to established protocols with precision.
  • Communicate findings and conclusions effectively through written reports and presentations.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, ensuring accurate reporting of data to colleagues and clients. Utilize ELN/LIMS systems for meticulous report management and database population.
  • Handle multiple projects simultaneously with efficiency.
  • Oversee inventory and procurement of laboratory supplies in collaboration with other lab personnel.
  • Contribute to a safe working environment by participating in safety initiatives and conducting laboratory safety evaluations.
Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Chemistry, Polymer/Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline.
  • 3-4 years of experience in an industrial research laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with Chromatographic (GPC, HPLC, GC/LC-MS) and/or spectroscopic techniques (NMR, FTIR, Raman, UV-Vis, XRF, XPS, ICP-OES, etc.) and polymer characterization methods is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving capabilities coupled with creativity and analytical thinking in experimental design.
  • Proficient hands-on experimentation skills, particularly in wet-lab environments. Experience in the adhesives or plastics sectors is beneficial.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to summarize key findings and produce detailed technical reports. Experience with LIMS/ELN software is a plus.
  • Quick learner with a keen eye for detail and a strong scientific curiosity.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including Microsoft software.
  • Able to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Organized with a service-oriented mindset.
  • Possess a proactive attitude, skilled in executing experiments and trials as instructed, demonstrating scientific insight and strategic thinking to achieve results.
  • Competent in performing moderately complex mathematical calculations.
  • Proven ability to complete moderately complex technical tasks independently, analyze data, and prepare effective reports and recommendations.
  • Skilled in collaborating with cross-functional teams to define and fulfill overall project requirements.
  • Solid foundation in scientific and engineering principles relevant to the field.
  • Capable of thriving in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
  • Environmentally conscious and safety-oriented.
  • Highly motivated with a strong initiative and energy.
  • Ability to effectively engage with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Minimal travel is anticipated.
