Position Overview:

Avery Dennison is in search of a Materials Science Analytical Specialist to contribute to the Materials Group North America Innovation Center. This role is situated within the Materials Science and Characterization Analytical division, which is dedicated to the advancement, optimization, and evaluation of materials technologies on a global scale. The ideal candidate will engage in product performance evaluation and characterization, primarily utilizing expertise in material and spectroscopic analytical methodologies to establish testing protocols and deliver analyses for project teams.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct routine analytical evaluations, including but not limited to chromatographic and/or spectroscopic techniques (such as GPC, HPLC, GC/LC/MS, FTIR, micro-FTIR, Raman, NMR) alongside product performance assessments and prototyping under the guidance of senior technical personnel.
  • Perform regular maintenance and calibration of laboratory instruments.
  • Collaborate effectively with technical teams to execute testing and provide results for further analysis.
  • Proactively refine and update testing methodologies.
  • Manage timelines for all assigned tasks, ensuring timely completion while juggling multiple requests.
  • Prepare samples and conduct tests adhering to established procedures with precision.
  • Communicate test outcomes and conclusions effectively through written reports and presentations.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, reporting data to colleagues and clients. Utilize ELN/LIMS systems to curate reports and assist in the accurate population of databases.
  • Handle multiple projects concurrently.
  • Manage inventory and order materials to ensure laboratory supplies are maintained in collaboration with other lab personnel.
  • Contribute to a safe working environment by participating in safety initiatives and conducting laboratory safety assessments.
Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Chemistry, Polymer/Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline.
  • 3-4 years of experience in an industrial research laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with chromatographic (GPC, HPLC, GC/LC-MS) and/or spectroscopic techniques (NMR, FTIR, Raman, UV-Vis, XRF, XPS, ICP-OES, etc.) and/or other polymer characterization methods is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities combined with creativity, versatility, and analytical thinking in experimental design.
  • Strong hands-on experimentation skills, including wet-lab techniques. Experience in the adhesives or plastics sectors is beneficial.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of summarizing critical findings and drafting comprehensive technical reports. Experience with LIMS/ELN software and databases is a plus.
  • Quick learner with meticulous attention to detail and a strong scientific curiosity.
  • Proficient in computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft and other software.
  • Able to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Well-organized with a service-oriented mindset.
  • Proactive attitude: skilled in executing experiments and trials as instructed; demonstrated scientific insight and strategic thinking in achieving results.
  • Capable of performing moderately complex mathematical calculations.
  • Proven ability to complete moderately complex technical assignments independently; adept at analyzing data and preparing effective reports and recommendations.
  • Skilled in effectively interfacing with cross-functional teams to define and execute overall requirements.
  • Solid scientific and engineering knowledge and experience in relevant fields.
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

  • High motivation, initiative, and energy.
  • Ability to interact effectively with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Minimal travel is anticipated.
