Job Description

Avery Dennison is seeking a highly skilled Chemical Research Scientist to join our Materials Group North America Innovation Center in Mentor, Ohio. This position will be in the Materials Science and Characterization Analytical group, responsible for developing, optimizing, and characterizing materials technologies worldwide.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct product performance testing and characterization using advanced analytical techniques, including Chromatographic and Spectroscopic methods.
  • Develop and optimize test methods, and provide analysis for project teams.
  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment.
  • Collaborate with technical teams to interface and provide results for further analysis.
  • Proactively develop and update test methods, and forecast promise date completion with assigned requests.
  • Prepare samples and conduct tests according to standard procedures with high accuracy.
  • Effectively communicate test results and conclusions in written reports and presentations.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation and reporting data to the customer/colleague.
  • Utilize ELN/LIMS system and carefully curate reports and help with the cogent population of databases.
  • Able to handle multiple work streams concurrently.
  • Inventory and order materials to maintain lab supplies along with other lab staff.
  • Provide and maintain a safe work environment by participating in safety programs, committees, or teams, and conducting laboratory safety audits.

Qualifications:

  • MS Degree in Chemistry, Polymer/Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or related field.
  • Minimum 3-4 years of industrial research lab experience.
  • Experience in Chromatographic (GPC, HPLC, GC/LC-MS) and/or Spectroscopic techniques (NMR, FTIR, Raman, UV-Vis, XRF, XPS, ICP-OES, etc.) and/or other polymer characterization techniques is a plus.
  • Demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills, coupled with creativity, versatility, and analytical thinking in designing experiments to solve technical problems.
  • Possess excellent hands-on experimentation skills, including wet-lab skills. Prior experience in adhesives or plastics industries is an advantage.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to both summarize critical findings and write in-depth technical reports.
  • Familiarity with LIMS/ELN software and database is a plus.
  • Fast learner, meticulous attention to detail, and scientific curiosity.
  • Proficient computer skills (familiarity with Microsoft- and other software).
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Well-organized and with a service-oriented attitude.
  • Can-do attitude: skilled in performing experiments and trials per instruction, demonstrated scientific acumen, and strategic thinking in obtaining results.
  • Ability to perform moderately complex mathematical computations.
  • Proven experience in completing moderately complex technical assignments without immediate supervision, analyzing moderately complex data, and preparing effective reports and recommendations.
  • Skilled in interfacing effectively with cross-functional groups to define and execute overall requirements.
  • Solid scientific and engineering knowledge and experience in specific fields.
  • Capable of working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Environmental awareness and safety conscious.
  • High motivation, initiative, and energy.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Ability to effectively interact with internal and external customers.
  • Less than 10% travel expected.
