Job Overview

Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) is a comprehensive legal defense organization dedicated to representing low-income individuals in various legal matters, including criminal, family, immigration, and civil cases. Our interdisciplinary teams, comprising attorneys, social workers, and advocates, collaborate to deliver high-quality legal assistance that benefits the individuals we serve, their families, and the broader community.

As a Social Advocate, you will work closely with attorneys to ensure holistic legal representation and develop strategic approaches for clients involved in the criminal justice system. Your role will include both written and verbal advocacy, client assessments, crisis intervention, and coordination with service providers to address clients' needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with attorneys to formulate comprehensive legal strategies for clients facing criminal charges.
  • Prepare detailed mitigation reports to support clients' cases.
  • Manage a diverse caseload, ensuring timely interventions and adherence to case-related deadlines.
  • Advocate for clients in court settings.
  • Conduct psychosocial evaluations, create service plans, and facilitate referrals to appropriate services.
  • Engage with external service providers to address client needs effectively.
  • Visit incarcerated clients to provide support and assessment.
  • Offer crisis intervention as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate case documentation in an electronic database.

Qualifications

  • Possession of a New York State Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) credential, or a master's degree in Social Work with a commitment to licensure.
  • Preferred experience in criminal court and forensic environments.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a defense team while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Dedication to understanding all facets of a client's situation that may impact their legal circumstances.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to engage with various stakeholders, including family members and potential witnesses.
  • Exceptional writing skills with a passion for crafting detailed and persuasive reports.
  • Familiarity with psychological and behavioral disorders as outlined in the DSM-5, along with an understanding of intergenerational trauma.
  • Proficient clinical assessment capabilities.
  • Commitment to providing emotional support and guidance to clients.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills.

Position Details

This is a full-time, exempt position with a standard schedule. The role is based at BDS's offices, with flexibility for in-person and remote work as needed. Salary is determined based on education and experience, with a competitive range and comprehensive benefits, including health insurance and retirement plans.
