Brooklyn, New York, United States Center for Justice Innovation Full time
Job Overview

About the Organization

The Center for Justice Innovation is a non-profit entity dedicated to collaborating with communities and justice systems to promote equity, enhance safety, and empower individuals and communities. The organization aims to identify and address the challenges that lead individuals into the criminal and civil legal systems as early as possible. This is achieved through various initiatives that focus on reducing incarceration and increasing economic opportunities, conducting research to determine effective practices, and disseminating findings to those looking to reform the justice system globally.

Operating Programs

The Center operates several innovative programs, including the renowned Red Hook Community Justice Center, which seeks to implement new solutions to complex issues and drive systemic change within the justice framework. These initiatives encompass community-based violence prevention, alternatives to incarceration, reentry support, and court-based programs aimed at minimizing unnecessary incarceration while fostering positive change for individuals and families.

Research Initiatives

The Center's research team, composed of social scientists, data analysts, and legal professionals, engages in extensive research on various justice-related topics both domestically and internationally. Their efforts include evaluating existing programs and policies, conducting community-based studies, and translating research into actionable strategies for stakeholders. The research outputs address critical issues such as court reform, intimate partner violence, and progressive prosecution.

Policy and Expert Guidance

The Center provides tailored assistance to jurisdictions seeking reform in areas such as problem-solving courts, tribal justice, and strategies to reduce incarceration and crime. This support encompasses data analysis, strategic planning, policy guidance, and site visits to operational programs.

Position Summary

The Red Hook Community Justice Center is seeking a Peer Specialist focused on Harm Reduction to engage with program participants and treatment service providers, facilitating communication and care coordination. Reporting to the Community Healing and Wellness Clinical Director, the Peer Specialist will serve as a community-based outreach professional, informing individuals about available services and resources. Responsibilities include training on the use of Narcan, drug testing strips, and other harm reduction tools, as well as managing the treatment referral process and initial assessments to ensure effective participant engagement.

  • Facilitate tailored educational sessions addressing the specific needs of individuals, focusing on treatment, harm reduction, and relapse prevention.
  • Coordinate referrals and follow-ups as necessary.
  • Provide crisis intervention and support to participants as required.

  • Experience in integrated substance abuse assessment and treatment, along with motivational interviewing techniques.
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative environment.
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish/English) are preferred.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Preferred credentials include CRPA, Peer Recovery Coach, or CASAC-T.
  • Familiarity with harm reduction principles and practices.

Position Type: Full-time
