Brooklyn, New York, United States Center for Justice Innovation Full time
Job Overview

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The Center for Justice Innovation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing equity and safety within communities while supporting individuals in their personal growth. The Center aims to proactively address the issues that lead individuals into the criminal and civil legal systems. This is achieved through innovative programming that minimizes incarceration and promotes economic opportunities, alongside conducting impactful research to share insights with global justice reformers.

The Center operates with a workforce of 900 employees and an annual budget of $100 million, focusing on three core areas: implementing and scaling programs that test new solutions, conducting original research to identify effective practices, and offering expert guidance to reformers in the justice sector worldwide.

PROGRAM INITIATIVES

The Center's initiatives, such as the acclaimed Red Hook Community Justice Center, are designed to explore new methodologies, tackle complex challenges, and drive systemic reform within the justice framework. Our programs encompass community violence prevention, alternatives to incarceration, reentry support, and court-based initiatives aimed at reducing unnecessary incarceration while fostering positive changes for individuals and families.

RESEARCH AND EVALUATION

The Center's research teams, composed of social scientists, data analysts, and legal experts, engage in comprehensive studies on various justice-related issues both domestically and internationally. Their work includes evaluating programs and policies, conducting community-based research, and translating findings into actionable strategies for stakeholders. The Center has produced valuable studies on topics such as court reform, restorative justice, and progressive prosecution, ensuring that their research is relevant and beneficial to the communities served.

POLICY SUPPORT AND EXPERT GUIDANCE

The Center offers practical assistance to jurisdictions aiming to reform their justice systems, focusing on areas such as problem-solving courts and reducing reliance on incarceration. This support includes data analysis, strategic planning, and policy advice, as well as facilitating visits to the Center's operational programs.

THE POSITION

Brooklyn Justice Initiatives (BJI), the Center's largest operational project, is focused on transforming the criminal court experience in Brooklyn by providing judges and attorneys with viable alternatives to traditional punitive measures. BJI operates from community-based offices and is composed of a diverse team of social service providers, resource coordinators, mental health professionals, and compliance specialists dedicated to enhancing the justice experience.
