Brooklyn, New York, United States Center for Justice Innovation Full time
Job Description

THE ORGANIZATION

The Center for Justice Innovation is a non-profit entity dedicated to collaborating with communities and justice systems to promote fairness, enhance safety, and empower individuals and communities. The Center aims to identify and address the challenges that lead individuals into the criminal and civil legal systems as early as possible. This is achieved through various means, including the development and implementation of programs that minimize the need for incarceration and foster economic opportunities, conducting original research to determine effective practices, and disseminating insights gained from our initiatives and studies to those seeking to reform the justice system globally.

The Center employs approximately 800 staff members and operates with a budget of $100 million, fulfilling its mission through three core areas: creating and scaling operational programs to test innovative solutions, conducting original research to evaluate effectiveness, and offering expert guidance and policy support to justice reform advocates worldwide.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Brooklyn Justice Initiatives (BJI), a program under the Center for Justice Innovation, is focused on transforming the criminal court experience in Brooklyn, New York, by providing judges and attorneys with viable alternatives to bail, fines, and incarceration. Operating from Kings County Criminal Court, BJI comprises a team of social service professionals, court-based resource coordinators, and others committed to enhancing the quality of justice. By offering meaningful pre-trial supervised release and post-conviction sentencing alternatives, BJI aims to leverage an arrest as an opportunity for positive change in a participant's life while mitigating the detrimental effects of incarceration.

BJI is currently seeking a Resource Coordinator. Reporting to a Senior Resource Coordinator, the Resource Coordinator will oversee the program referral process for BJI's Supervised Release and Alternative to Incarceration initiatives. Responsibilities include reviewing available information about potentially eligible participants to assess their suitability for BJI programs. Once participants are enrolled, the Resource Coordinator will provide regular written and verbal updates to the court, including defense attorneys, assistant district attorneys, and judges. Additionally, the Resource Coordinator will provide court coverage across various Criminal and Supreme Court parts, including specialized court initiatives and arraignments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a coordinator in the Brooklyn arraignment, all-purpose, treatment, and trial court parts to evaluate eligibility for BJI programs.
  • Conduct preliminary in-court mental health screenings and facilitate program outreach and referrals for clinical assessments.
  • Deliver written and verbal case updates across multiple court parts and to court personnel.
  • Engage with judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and court staff regarding the suitability of individuals for specific BJI programs.
  • Collaborate with a diverse range of criminal justice, city government, and community partners.
  • Assist with clinical assessments and screenings as required.
  • Complete intakes and assessments for mandated participants.
  • Help schedule and reschedule mandated participants for both on-site and off-site groups and community service.
  • Ensure that all mandated participants are connected with their assigned case manager upon release.
  • Provide direct services to program participants, including group facilitation as needed.
  • Implement crisis intervention protocols to ensure participant safety and connection to appropriate services post-arraignment.
  • Escort participants to community-based treatment providers as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate participant information in electronic databases and physical files, including assessment, screening, and outcome data.
  • Assist with outreach and scheduling related to participant compliance requirements.
  • Support senior staff in developing and implementing new programs, protocols, initiatives, and interventions.
  • Participate in data collection and management efforts.
  • Provide training to participants on overdose response.
  • Attend required staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Participate in Brooklyn Justice Initiatives' events after hours as needed.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of one year of experience in a criminal court setting or human services field, or 3-4 years of equivalent experience. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, along with the ability to engage effectively with various stakeholders, are essential. Candidates should be highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of thriving in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency in Microsoft and Google Suites is required, and familiarity with Skype for Business is preferred. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds in a culturally responsive manner and will be able to work both independently and collaboratively, in-person and remotely. Bilingual (English-Spanish) skills are preferred.

Position Type: Full-time, hourly, non-exempt with a rotating schedule that includes day, swing, night, and weekend shifts, as well as some holidays.

Compensation: The salary range for this position is $53,500 - $66,000, commensurate with experience. The Center for Justice Innovation offers a comprehensive benefits package, including healthcare coverage, dental and vision insurance, disability coverage, life insurance, and flexible spending accounts. We prioritize mental health support for our staff and provide services through our healthcare plans. A 403(b) retirement plan with a two-to-one employer contribution up to 5% is also available.

The Center for Justice Innovation is an equal opportunity employer committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace. We do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, national origin, age, military service eligibility, veteran status, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, or any other protected category. We strongly encourage applications from women, people of color, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and individuals with prior contact with the criminal justice system. Our goal is to create a supportive and respectful environment where every individual feels valued and included.
