Brooklyn, New York, United States Center for Justice Innovation Full time

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The Center for Justice Innovation is a non-profit entity dedicated to collaborating with communities and justice systems to promote fairness, enhance safety, and empower individuals and communities to flourish. The Center aims to identify and address the issues that lead individuals into the criminal and civil legal systems as early as possible. This is achieved through various initiatives, including the development and implementation of programs that minimize the necessity for incarceration and boost economic opportunities, conducting original research to ascertain effective practices, and disseminating insights gained from our programs and research to those seeking to reform the justice system globally.

The Center operates with a workforce of 800 employees and an annual budget of $100 million, executing its mission through three core areas: creating and scaling operational programs to test innovative solutions, conducting original research to evaluate effectiveness, and providing expert guidance and policy support to justice reform advocates worldwide.

PROGRAM INITIATIVES

The Center's operational initiatives, such as the acclaimed Red Hook Community Justice Center and Midtown Community Justice Center, are designed to test innovative solutions, tackle complex challenges, and strive for systemic reform within the justice framework. Our projects encompass community-based violence prevention, alternatives to incarceration, reentry programs, and court-based initiatives aimed at reducing unnecessary incarceration while fostering positive changes for individuals and families. Through these efforts, we have achieved measurable outcomes, including safer neighborhoods, decreased incarceration rates, and improved community perceptions of justice.

RESEARCH AND EVALUATION

The Center's research teams consist of social scientists, data analysts, and legal professionals who are either academically trained or possess lived experiences. They conduct research on a variety of issues related to the criminal-legal system both domestically and internationally. Their work includes evaluating programs and policies, conducting exploratory community-based studies, and providing research translation and strategic planning for system stakeholders. The Center has published studies on topics such as court and jail reform, intimate partner violence, restorative justice, gun violence, reentry, sixth amendment rights, and progressive prosecution. The research teams aim to make their findings meaningful and actionable for the communities they serve, policymakers, and practitioners.

POLICY AND EXPERT ASSISTANCE

The Center offers practical planning and implementation support to various jurisdictions in reform areas such as problem-solving courts (e.g., community courts, treatment courts, domestic violence courts), tribal justice, and strategies to reduce incarceration and crime. Our expert assistance encompasses data analysis, strategic planning, policy guidance, and hosting site visits to our operational programs.

SUPPORT SERVICES

A dedicated support team within the Center ensures seamless operations across multiple domains, including finance, legal, technology, human resources, fundraising, real estate, and communications. Comprising 15% of the organization's workforce, these teams provide essential infrastructure support and innovative solutions aligned with the Center's mission and values.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Level Up initiative, part of the Red Hook Community Justice Center's workforce development efforts, is committed to bridging the employment and opportunity gaps for young adults in the Red Hook area and surrounding communities. This program adopts a personalized approach, offering individualized support to system-involved individuals facing unique challenges that impede sustained employment. In addition to traditional career readiness services, Level Up provides tailored assistance, including educational and financial support, ensuring participants receive comprehensive aid in their pursuit of meaningful employment.

The Red Hook Community Justice Center is seeking an Employment Support Specialist for its Level Up program. This role focuses on assisting young adults, aged 16 to 30, in securing employment and providing case management support to help them maintain their jobs and work towards long-term career goals. Reporting to the Community Initiatives Manager, the Employment Support Specialist will lead workshops on job readiness and provide comprehensive administrative and case management services to young adults. This position is vital in equipping young adults with the necessary skills and resources for success in their career paths.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Workshop Facilitation: Develop and deliver engaging workshops focused on job readiness, emphasizing resume building, interview skills, and job search strategies.
  • Community Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with employers and community organizations to expand job opportunities for participants.
  • Direct Participant Support: Engage participants in discussions about their employment goals and conduct assessments to determine their skills and interests.
  • Employment Assistance: Identify and connect participants with relevant job opportunities and provide guidance on interview preparation and job search strategies.
  • Administrative Support: Maintain accurate participant records and assist in preparing reports and program-related documentation.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and 3-4 years of experience in youth and community development. Strong organizational skills, the ability to multitask, and a commitment to engaging individuals who may be justice-involved are essential. Experience in motivational interviewing is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate cultural competence and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required, along with proficiency in office software and case management systems.

Position Type: Full-time, with standard hours and occasional evening or weekend commitments.

Compensation: The salary range for this position is competitive and commensurate with experience, accompanied by a comprehensive benefits package that includes healthcare, dental coverage, vision insurance, disability insurance, and a retirement plan with employer contributions.

The Center for Justice Innovation is an equal opportunity employer, committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace. We encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds and identities, ensuring a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and included.
