Brooklyn, New York, United States Center for Justice Innovation Full time
Job Overview

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The Center for Justice Innovation is a non-profit entity dedicated to collaborating with communities and justice systems to promote fairness, enhance safety, and empower individuals and communities. The Center aims to identify and address the challenges that lead individuals into the criminal and civil legal systems as early as possible. This is achieved through various means, including the development and implementation of programs that minimize the necessity for incarceration and foster economic opportunities, conducting original research to determine effective practices, and disseminating insights gained from our initiatives and research to those looking to reform the justice system globally.

The Center operates with a workforce of 900 employees and an annual budget of $100 million, achieving its mission through three main pillars: creating and scaling operational programs to explore innovative solutions, conducting original research to evaluate effectiveness, and offering expert guidance and policy support to justice reform advocates worldwide.

Operational Programs

The Center's operational programs, such as the acclaimed Red Hook Community Justice Center and Midtown Community Justice Center, are designed to test innovative ideas, tackle complex issues, and strive for systemic transformation within the justice framework. Our initiatives encompass community-based violence prevention, alternatives to incarceration, reentry support, and court-based programs aimed at reducing unnecessary incarceration while promoting positive changes for individuals and families. These efforts have led to measurable outcomes, including safer neighborhoods, decreased incarceration rates, and improved community perceptions of justice.

Research

The Center's research teams consist of social scientists, data analysts, and legal professionals who possess academic training or lived experiences. They conduct research on a variety of issues related to the criminal-legal system both domestically and internationally. Their work includes evaluating programs and policies, performing exploratory community-based studies, and providing research translation and strategic planning for system stakeholders. The Center has published studies on various topics, including court and jail reform, intimate partner violence, restorative justice, gun violence, reentry, sixth amendment rights, and progressive prosecution. The research teams are committed to ensuring their findings are meaningful and actionable for the communities they serve, policymakers, and practitioners.

Policy & Expert Guidance

The Center offers practical planning and implementation support to a diverse range of jurisdictions in reform areas such as problem-solving courts (e.g., community courts, treatment courts, domestic violence courts), tribal justice, and strategies to reduce incarceration and the reliance on fines/fees while decreasing crime and violence. Our expert assistance encompasses data analysis, strategic planning, policy advice, and hosting site visits to our operational programs.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Brooklyn Justice Initiatives (BJI) aims to transform the criminal court experience in Brooklyn, New York, by providing judges and attorneys with meaningful alternatives to bail, fines, and incarceration. BJI comprises a team of social service professionals, court-based resource coordinators, and others dedicated to enhancing the quality of justice. By offering significant pre-trial supervised release and post-conviction sentencing options, BJI seeks to leverage an arrest as an opportunity for positive change in participants' lives while mitigating the adverse effects of incarceration.

BJI is currently seeking a Social Worker for its Alternatives to Incarceration program. Reporting to the Senior Social Worker, the primary responsibility of the Social Worker will be to engage with individuals participating in Alternative to Incarceration (ATI) programming, Alternative to Detention (ATD), and Early Diversion initiatives. The Social Worker will also provide coverage for various court-based programs managed by BJI, including Young Adult Court, Adult-ATI, Felony-ATI, early diversion, and mental health diversion programs, offering both pre and post-plea opportunities for individuals facing a range of charges.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver comprehensive, clinically informed case management services to young adult and adult participants (and, when appropriate, their families) addressing issues such as substance use, mental health, trauma, domestic violence, housing, and educational/vocational needs;
  • Conduct clinical assessments and provide tailored service and programming recommendations for court parties;
  • Manage a caseload of mandated participants, providing case management and individual counseling services;
  • Perform intakes for early diversion and Alternative to Incarceration participants;
  • Assist colleagues with crisis intervention and management, offering trauma-informed de-escalation and clinical support to participants in distress;
  • Engage with collateral sources to encourage compliance and court monitoring as necessary;
  • Maintain accurate participant information in electronic databases and physical files;
  • Facilitate referrals to community-based organizations for additional support;
  • Coordinate service delivery among on-site and community-based agencies;
  • Monitor participant compliance with service mandates;
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with community organizations that provide age-appropriate interventions and services to court-involved individuals;
  • Prepare and deliver accurate written and verbal reports on participant progress to the court and other stakeholders;
  • Participate in interdisciplinary treatment meetings;
  • Facilitate and develop a variety of on-site groups that are both cognitive behavioral and psychoeducational;
  • Support the ATI management in developing and implementing new programs, initiatives, and interventions;
  • Assist with administrative tasks and data management as needed;
  • Contribute to grant reporting requirements as necessary;
  • Provide clinical services to program participants on a voluntary basis post-mandate;
  • Attend all required staff meetings and training sessions;
  • Participate in BJI and community-based events outside of regular hours as needed;
  • Perform additional relevant tasks as required.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess a LMSW and have a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in social work, the criminal justice system, or with justice-involved communities. Strong written communication skills are essential. The candidate must be an effective communicator capable of working in a multidisciplinary environment and fostering strong relationships with various agencies and organizations. Experience working with youth and young adults, individuals facing domestic violence, mental health challenges, substance use disorders, and/or homelessness is advantageous. Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is a plus.

Position Type: Full-time

Compensation: The salary range for this position is $57,500 - $73,500, commensurate with experience. The Center for Justice Innovation offers a comprehensive benefits package, including healthcare with a national network, basic dental coverage, vision insurance, short-term and long-term disability, life insurance, and flexible spending accounts, including commuter FSA. We prioritize mental health care for our staff and provide services like Talkspace and Ginger through our healthcare plans. Additionally, we offer a 403(b) retirement plan with a two-to-one employer contribution up to 5%.

The Center for Justice Innovation is an equal opportunity employer committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace. We do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, national origin, age, military service eligibility, veteran status, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, or any other category protected by law.
