Position Title: Itinerant Educator for Hearing Impairment

Supervision: Reports to the Director of Special Education

Employment Classification: Exempt

Objective:

The Itinerant Educator for Hearing Impairment is responsible for delivering direct and/or consultative educational services to individuals with hearing challenges aged 3-21. The role involves working with students identified as eligible under IDEA for Hearing Impairment, necessitating travel across various educational institutions to provide essential services. The aim is to facilitate effective learning experiences for students with hearing impairments in diverse educational environments.

Qualifications:

  1. Valid professional educator certification in Alabama
  2. Bachelor's Degree in Special Education with Hearing Impairment (HI Certification) or Deaf/Hard of Hearing Education or a related discipline from an accredited institution
  3. Recent evidence of sign language proficiency (SLPI)
  4. ASL proficiency is preferred
  5. Comprehensive understanding of federal and state special education regulations.
  6. Familiarity with special education policies and procedures.
  7. Exceptional interpersonal skills.
  8. Collaborative team player with strong communication abilities.
  9. Understanding of inclusive education practices and differentiated instruction.
Key Responsibilities:
  1. Engage in Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET) meetings for eligibility assessments.
  2. Develop Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) tailored for students with hearing impairments.
  3. Collaborate with audiologists to recommend assistive technologies and equipment to enhance student engagement and success.
  4. Maintain regular communication with parents/guardians and educational staff throughout the academic year.
  5. Consult with external agencies as necessary.
  6. Assess individual and group educational needs.
  7. Oversee students in various educational settings.
  8. Deliver direct or consultative educational services to students with hearing loss.
  9. Establish objectives and design instructional programs that cater to the unique needs and capabilities of students.
  10. Implement instruction aligned with students' IEP goals and benchmarks.
  11. Utilize appropriate strategies and materials tailored to students' abilities and learning styles.
  12. Demonstrate knowledge of assistive technologies for hearing-impaired students, including FM systems and hearing aids.
  13. Monitor the functionality and usage of assistive technology and FM equipment.
  14. Create instructional activities that align with local and state educational standards.
  15. Employ diverse techniques to maximize instructional time and achieve educational objectives.
  16. Encourage student self-advocacy initiatives.
  17. Support general education teachers in preparing materials for the inclusion of students with hearing impairments.
  18. Evaluate student performance relative to educational goals and maintain accurate documentation.
  19. Communicate instructional expectations and student progress to parents/guardians.
  20. Maintain detailed records of student progress and submit necessary reports.
  21. Coordinate and participate in IEP meetings for students with hearing impairments.
  22. Establish and uphold standards of student behavior to foster a conducive learning environment.
  23. Collaborate with school personnel in selecting instructional materials and planning effective educational strategies.
  24. Complete all required documentation in a timely manner.
  25. Exhibit strong interpersonal skills and professionalism.
  26. Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills.
  27. Adhere to school policies, administrative procedures, and applicable regulations.
  28. Participate in ongoing professional development activities.

Physical Requirements:

While fulfilling the responsibilities of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, and utilize manual dexterity. The role may involve speaking and listening, as well as occasional physical activities such as climbing stairs, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Vision requirements include the ability to see at various distances and adjust focus as needed.

Compensation: Salary determined by the Alabama Department of Education's salary schedule.
