The Schar School of Policy and Government is dedicated to equipping students with the skills necessary for high-level decision-making in a complex and technological environment.

About the Position:

The Head of Graduate Student Services is tasked with the creation, coordination, execution, and evaluation of academic advising, support services, and student initiatives for the Master's and Certificate programs within the Schar School. This role reports to the Assistant Dean of Graduate Student Services and collaborates closely with graduate program directors, faculty, staff, and various university offices to enhance student success and retention.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Student Support: Oversees the planning and execution of student services for Schar master's students, encompassing a comprehensive range of academic advising, support initiatives, registration, and related processes; Develops and implements programs aimed at promoting academic success and degree completion among diverse and underrepresented student populations; Establishes strategic priorities for service delivery in partnership with the Assistant Dean of Graduate Student Services; Acts as the primary academic advisor for select graduate programs; Monitors and enforces student adherence to academic policies; Assesses services and processes in collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Graduate Student Services.
  • Outreach and Events: Organizes and executes new student orientation, graduation events, co-curricular activities, and academic support initiatives; Designs outreach strategies that respect diversity and inclusion, aimed at attracting underrepresented groups to the Schar School; Works with the marketing team to ensure event visibility in promotional materials; Serves as the primary representative for Schar Master's Student Services at admissions events and prospective student gatherings.
  • Program and Faculty Support: Actively collaborates with and advises faculty and Program Directors on curricular matters and student academic concerns; Assists Program Directors and staff with course scheduling and offerings; Identifies opportunities for collaborative programming across student services and with other university departments to enhance student academic success and retention.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a relevant field;
  • Extensive experience in higher education/student services or related areas, including significant academic advising experience (typically 5+ years);
  • Proven leadership experience in higher education;
  • Proficiency in utilizing technology for data management and presentations;
  • Commitment to a collaborative team environment;
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and writing skills;
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities; and
  • Exceptional organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional experience in academic advising or a related field; and
  • Experience working with adult or college-educated populations is preferred.
