Role Responsibilities

The Youth Support Specialist plays a crucial role in delivering program services that are trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, and aligned with the Positive Youth Development Framework. This position involves direct supervision and facilitation of group activities for youth aged 12-18 in a 24/7 program setting. The specialist is responsible for ensuring the safety of all participants and staff by establishing and enforcing guidelines, demonstrating leadership, and maintaining effective communication.

  • Oversee program participants to guarantee their physical, emotional, and psychological well-being.
  • Implement principles of positive youth development to empower youth in making informed choices and building resilience.
  • Consistently establish and uphold rules and expectations throughout programming.
  • Conduct daily one-on-one check-ins with residents and drop-in youth, family meetings, and follow-up discussions to identify additional support needs and update each client's individualized service plan promptly.
  • Exhibit strong crisis intervention and de-escalation skills, providing appropriate referrals in response to 24-hour crisis situations, drop-ins, residents, families, and community members.
  • Utilize assessment skills and screening tools in collaboration with youth, families, and community partners to ensure appropriate recommendations and referrals for services.
  • Assist youth in enhancing their education, vocational skills, relationships, communication, independent living skills, and overall health.
  • Facilitate and supervise daily structured activities that promote the 8 C's of positive youth development.
  • Maintain accurate daily documentation and record-keeping, including client case notes and service records.
  • Conduct daily facility maintenance checks, including cleaning and disinfecting the facility and company vehicle.
  • Plan and prepare nutritious meals for residents and drop-in clients, involving them in the cooking process to encourage healthy communication and independent living skills.
  • Support youth in scheduling and providing safe transportation to medical appointments and other necessary health services.
  • Participate in weekly meetings to discuss program updates, report on cases, and identify service delivery needs.
  • Collaborate effectively with other youth support specialists and management to ensure comprehensive case management and care coordination.
  • Implement program assessments with youth to guide their Individualized Service Plan and Self-Care Support Plan, tracking progress throughout treatment.
  • Refer to and collaborate with community partners assigned to youth to ensure holistic care and accessible services.
  • Comply with mandated reporting requirements, including timely notifications to Child Welfare Services and documentation in the organization's risk management software.
  • Report all incidents and unusual occurrences following the Channel Islands YMCA incident reporting process.
  • Understand and enforce all YMCA safety policies, including emergency procedures.
  • Demonstrate professional boundaries, self-care practices, and seek support from supervisors when needed.
  • Participate in all required training mandated by federal, licensing, agency, and/or contractual obligations.
  • May assist other departments with supervisor approval.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate's degree in a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience preferred.
  • Complete required certifications within 30 days of hire.
  • Complete all necessary training within two weeks of hire.
  • Ability to obtain a criminal record clearance.
  • Participation in DMV Pull Program preferred.
  • Health Screening Report and negative TB test required prior to employment.
