Covenant House California (CHC) is a non-profit organization committed to serving youth in need with utmost respect and unconditional support.
We are excited to announce the launch of a new Transitional Housing Program in Santa Clara and are looking for qualified Overnight Youth Engagement Specialists (YES) to join our residential team. Ideal candidates will have experience working with youth who have faced homelessness, possess traumatic backgrounds, identify as LGBTQ, are gender non-conforming, or encounter multiple challenges and complex needs. Candidates should have knowledge and/or experience in youth development programs, employing a harm reduction approach, utilizing trauma-informed practices, and valuing collaboration within a multidisciplinary team to foster a safe and inclusive environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise program operations, ensuring the safety and maintenance of facility areas.
- Maintain awareness of safety in various situations and spaces.
- Execute daily operations in alignment with established policies and procedures.
- Provide professional and welcoming coverage for phone and door inquiries, addressing crises and providing information and resources.
- Implement crisis prevention and intervention strategies in accordance with agency protocols.
- Build rapport with youth, serving as a positive role model while establishing and maintaining healthy boundaries.
- Actively engage as a team member, encouraging youth participation in activities.
- Directly supervise youth in the program during on-site activities, community outings, and appointments.
- Develop familiarity with community resources available to clients.
- Teach essential life skills, including personal hygiene and household management.
- Facilitate skill-building groups and workshops as assigned.
- Maintain consistent communication with the multidisciplinary team through shift notes and logs, as well as critical incident reports.
- Participate in training, meetings, and supervision as required.
- Serve as backup coverage when designated.
- Conduct triage with youth, assessing their needs and clarifying issues.
- Inspect common areas for cleanliness on a daily basis.
- Assume the role of Person in Charge (PIC) as assigned.
- Be punctual and present for all scheduled meetings, training sessions, and shifts.
Qualifications:
Education: High School Diploma required; Bachelor's Degree in Human Services or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience in a residential program.
Experience: Minimum of 1-2 years working with youth aged 18-24.
Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, organizational abilities, and proficiency in computer applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.). Must be a self-starter and team player capable of collaborating with staff, clients, vendors, and the public.
Transportation: Valid CA driver's license, good driving record, and reliable transportation are required. May involve transporting clients/staff using agency vehicles.
Working Conditions: General office environment. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs occasionally, and to bend, sit, and stand for extended periods. Weekend and holiday work may be necessary.
Knowledge: Understanding of Adolescent Development, Crisis Intervention, Trauma-Informed Care, Harm Reduction, and CPR & First Aid.
