Role Summary

Engineer I/II/III roles involve performing engineering tasks and providing support to teams in designated areas. Responsibilities include researching and analyzing engineering data, reviewing and designing plans, approving and maintaining relevant engineering documentation, and assisting with project inquiries and issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts research and analysis of engineering data to prepare and update plans and correspondence.
  • Reviews and designs plans to ensure compliance with codes for public works, utility facilities, street lighting, water/wastewater management, and traffic management engineering projects.
  • Performs engineering tasks such as inspecting project sites, estimating project costs, and overseeing project progress.
  • Prepares, approves, evaluates, and maintains related engineering reports and documentation, including specifications, project invoices, proposals, grant applications, and permits.
  • Facilitates project implementation by coordinating with various stakeholders.
  • Investigates and addresses inquiries and concerns from contractors, staff, the public, and other organizational entities.
  • Participates in staff meetings to share information; engages in training sessions, seminars, or conferences to enhance professional skills.
  • May perform additional tasks such as training and supervising junior staff as necessary.

Qualifications

Educational Requirement: A bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related discipline is required. For Engineer I, four years of relevant full-time experience may be considered in lieu of a bachelor's degree.

Experience Requirements:

  • Engineer I: No experience is required for applicants with a bachelor's degree; non-degreed applicants must have two years of experience in addition to degree equivalency.
  • Engineer II: Requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience in addition to meeting the educational standards.
  • Engineer III: Requires a minimum of five years of related, full-time equivalent experience in addition to meeting the educational standards.

Special Certifications and Licenses: A valid driver's license and a driving record that complies with City Driving Standards are required. Depending on the position, State and/or City certifications may also be necessary.

Additional Requirements: Employees may be required to work beyond their regular hours in response to short-term departmental needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
