Job Summary

The City of Chesapeake's Department of Public Works is seeking a highly skilled Traffic Engineer II/III to lead our Traffic Calming Program and provide technical expertise in traffic modeling and leadership. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of traffic calming strategies, reviewing traffic impact analyses, and ensuring the safe and efficient movement of traffic in our city.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Traffic Calming Program, including the development and implementation of traffic calming strategies
  • Review and analyze traffic impact analyses to ensure compliance with city regulations
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to team members on traffic modeling and engineering practices
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure the safe and efficient movement of traffic in the city
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest traffic engineering software and modeling tools, including Synchro, VISSIM, and AutoCAD

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a closely related field
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience for Engineer II and 5 years of experience for Engineer III in traffic engineering, including traffic modeling and technical leadership
  • Professional Engineer license required for Engineer III
  • Virginia DEQ Certified Plan Reviewer and/or Program Administrator for SWM required within 12 months of employment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license desired for Engineer II
  • Experience with traffic signal timing and traffic signal system operations
