Position Overview

Role Summary

Engineers I/II/III are tasked with executing engineering responsibilities and providing essential support to teams in their designated areas. Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting thorough research and analysis of engineering data to prepare and update plans and documentation.
  • Reviewing and designing engineering plans to ensure compliance with applicable codes for public infrastructure, utility systems, street lighting, water and wastewater management, and traffic engineering projects.
  • Performing engineering duties such as site inspections, cost estimations, and overseeing project timelines.
  • Preparing, approving, and maintaining engineering reports and documentation, including specifications, project invoices, proposals, grant applications, and permits.
  • Coordinating project implementation by engaging with various stakeholders.
  • Addressing inquiries and concerns from contractors, staff, the public, and other agencies.
  • Participating in staff meetings to share information and attending training sessions, seminars, or conferences to enhance professional development.
  • Carrying out additional responsibilities such as training and supervising junior staff as needed.

Qualifications

Educational Requirement: A bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related discipline is required. For Engineer I positions, candidates with a bachelor's degree are not required to have prior experience; however, non-degreed applicants must possess two years of relevant experience.

Experience Requirement:

  • Engineer I: No prior experience is necessary for candidates with a bachelor's degree; non-degreed candidates must have two years of relevant experience.
  • Engineer II: Requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience in addition to the educational qualifications.
  • Engineer III: Requires a minimum of five years of related, full-time equivalent experience alongside the educational qualifications.

Certifications: A valid driver's license and a driving record compliant with City Driving Standards are required. Depending on the role, state and/or city certifications may also be necessary.

Additional Requirements: Employees may be required to work beyond their standard hours in response to departmental needs or city-wide emergencies.
