Under the general guidance of a Lieutenant, the Police Supervisor plays an essential role in ensuring a secure and protected atmosphere for the community. This position entails supervising officers and civilian personnel, directing patrol activities, and offering leadership. The Police Supervisor is accountable for upholding departmental regulations and state statutes, improving communication between staff and management, and mentoring junior staff members. Furthermore, they guarantee the safety and security of all individuals on campus premises.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee daily patrol activities to maintain the safety and security of the campus environment.
  • Monitor and assess the performance of team members, providing guidance as necessary and acknowledging commendable actions and behaviors.
  • Conduct shift change briefings to ensure all officers are adequately equipped and informed about their responsibilities, special instructions, and other pertinent information.
  • Effectively address a wide range of issues using sound judgment and discretion, ensuring proficient crisis management and conflict resolution.
  • Proactively identify ongoing challenges and suggest new procedures or protocol modifications to improve departmental operations.
  • Assume the role of Shift Commander in the absence of a Lieutenant, ensuring continuity of leadership and operational integrity.
  • Act as a positive role model and mentor to both subordinates and peers, fostering a culture of professionalism and ethical conduct.
  • Implement the College's emergency preparedness strategy during crises and other significant incidents, coordinating response efforts to uphold campus safety.
  • Engage in campus safety initiatives and collaborate closely with Emerson community members, groups, and other college departments to address public safety issues.
  • Serve as a liaison with other public safety organizations and the judicial system, enhancing communication and collaborative efforts to improve overall public safety.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of 3 years of law enforcement experience, preferably in a campus environment.
  • Must have graduated from a full-time police recruit training academy accredited by the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council or the Massachusetts State Police Academy for campus police officers. Graduates from out-of-state academies or the Massachusetts Reserve Intermittent Training Academy with MPTC Basic Training Exemption will also be considered.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator's license and be insurable by the College's automobile liability insurer.
  • Successful completion of annual fitness for duty assessment, including a background investigation, psychological evaluation, and medical release.

Must meet the State Police requirements for obtaining Special State Police Officer powers as listed in applicable regulations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to remain on feet for extended periods, stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, carry, push, pull, climb stairs, balance, walk, and run.
  • Must be able to access all facilities on foot to respond to emergency calls for service, including upper floors of campus buildings when elevators are unavailable.
  • Must be capable of conducting visual surveillance of individuals and surroundings.
  • Must be physically able to operate Department equipment.
  • Work includes exposure to elements, severe weather conditions, and loud noises.
  • The work environment may expose one to hazards and physical risks to personal safety.
  • Must be able to wear the required uniform.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position involves both indoor and outdoor work. Exposure to moderate noise levels.
  • Occasional exposure to extreme temperatures and inclement weather conditions.
  • Exposure to dust, oils, chemicals, and fumes. Risk of hazardous driving conditions, moving mechanical parts, and electric shock.
  • May occasionally work in confined spaces or hazardous locations.
  • May occasionally be exposed to bodily fluids.
  • Must be available to work different shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
