Under the guidance of a Lieutenant, the Campus Safety Supervisor is integral in ensuring a secure and protected atmosphere for all community members. This role encompasses supervising officers and support staff, directing patrol activities, and offering leadership. The Supervisor is tasked with upholding departmental regulations and state statutes, fostering communication between personnel and management, and guiding junior staff. Furthermore, they are committed to the safety and well-being of everyone on campus grounds.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee daily patrol operations to maintain a secure campus environment.
  • Monitor and assess the performance of team members, providing guidance and acknowledging commendable actions.
  • Conduct shift change briefings to ensure all personnel are equipped and informed regarding their responsibilities and special directives.
  • Effectively address a variety of situations using sound judgment and discretion, ensuring proficient crisis management and conflict resolution.
  • Identify ongoing challenges and propose new procedures or modifications to improve departmental operations.
  • Assume the role of Shift Commander in the absence of a Lieutenant, ensuring leadership continuity and operational integrity.
  • Act as a positive role model and mentor to both junior staff and colleagues, promoting a culture of professionalism and ethical conduct.
  • Implement the College's emergency response plan during crises and significant incidents, coordinating efforts to uphold campus safety.
  • Engage in campus safety initiatives and collaborate closely with Emerson community members, groups, and other departments to address public safety issues.
  • Serve as a liaison with external public safety agencies and the judicial system, enhancing communication and collaborative efforts to improve overall safety.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 3 years of law enforcement experience, preferably in an educational setting.
  • Completion of a full-time police recruit training program accredited by the relevant authorities.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license and eligibility for coverage under the College's automobile liability insurance.
  • Successful completion of annual fitness assessments, including background checks, psychological evaluations, and medical clearances.

Must meet the state requirements for obtaining special law enforcement powers as outlined in relevant regulations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to remain on feet for extended periods, including activities such as stooping, kneeling, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing stairs, balancing, walking, and running.
  • Capability to access all facilities on foot to respond to emergencies, including upper floors of buildings when elevators are unavailable.
  • Ability to conduct visual surveillance of individuals and surroundings.
  • Physical capability to operate departmental equipment.
  • Exposure to various environmental conditions, including severe weather and noise.
  • Work environment may involve hazards and physical risks.
  • Ability to wear the required uniform.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position requires work both indoors and outdoors, with exposure to moderate noise levels.
  • Occasional exposure to extreme temperatures and inclement weather conditions.
  • Exposure to dust, chemicals, and fumes, as well as hazardous driving conditions.
  • May occasionally work in confined or hazardous spaces.
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, including weekends and holidays as necessary.
