Job Overview

A Senior Applications Engineer plays a pivotal role in evaluating the costs and resources essential for various projects or services across multiple sectors. This position involves analyzing project specifications, reviewing technical drawings and data sheets, and collaborating with diverse stakeholders to ascertain the necessary materials, labor, and equipment. The role also encompasses researching market rates, collecting quotes from suppliers and subcontractors, and formulating comprehensive cost estimates and proposals. This function is vital for ensuring precise budgeting and pricing in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and engineering.

Key Responsibilities:

Primary Duties:
  • Conduct thorough reviews of client-provided specifications to assess the feasibility of Powell's manufacturing or supply capabilities.
  • Interpret various electrical schematics, including single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, elevations, control schematics, and site layouts.
  • Develop accurate proposals based on a detailed review of customer documentation.
  • Identify and communicate potential application issues prior to proposal formulation.
  • Transform customer designs into actionable proposals.
  • Enhance proposed solutions for mutual advantage.
  • Draft effective comments to clarify Powell's offerings.
  • Serve as a technical resource for the Powell Sales team.
  • Support technical discussions and solutions for the Powell Sales team.
  • Evaluate subcontractor proposals to complete Powell's offerings.
  • Assess risks associated with subcontractor proposals.
  • Collaborate with other divisions within Powell to create cross-business solutions.
  • Manage projects with minimal oversight.
  • Possibly lead complex projects involving multiple Application Engineers.
Occasional Duties:
  • Participate in sales and marketing initiatives, including client meetings and industry conferences.
  • Contribute to cost reduction strategies in collaboration with Engineering and Operations.
  • Conduct market research as required.
  • Assist in developing specifications for new and existing products.
Essential Functions:
  • Prepare detailed, accurate, and competitive proposals - 90% of the role.
  • Engage in customer-facing activities - 10% of the role.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in electrical equipment estimation or a similar area.
Skills and Competencies:
  • Strong understanding of electrical theory and industry standards, including IEEE/ANSI, NEC, IBC, and NFPA.
  • Knowledge of low and medium voltage distribution equipment ratings and design principles.
  • Familiarity with DC systems, UPS systems, HVAC, and pressurization techniques.
  • Ability to interpret interconnect, conduit, and cable schedules.
  • Proficient in reading and understanding electrical specifications and drawings.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Customer-oriented approach.
  • Effective time management and prioritization abilities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Capability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to acquire new skills and embrace new responsibilities.
  • Proficient in Visio, AutoCAD, and Inventor software.
  • Competent in Microsoft Office Suite.
