Job Overview

A Senior Applications Engineer plays a pivotal role in evaluating the costs and resources essential for various projects or services across multiple sectors. This position involves a thorough assessment of project specifications, meticulous inspection of drawings and data sheets, and collaboration with diverse stakeholders to ascertain the necessary materials, labor, and equipment. Additionally, these engineers conduct market research, gather quotes from suppliers and subcontractors, and formulate comprehensive cost estimates and proposals. Their contributions are vital for ensuring precise budgeting and pricing in the realms of construction, manufacturing, and engineering.

Key Responsibilities:

Primary Duties:
  • Conduct independent reviews of customer-provided specifications to assess the feasibility of manufacturing or supply.
  • Interpret electrical schematics, including single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, elevations, control schematics, and site layouts.
  • Develop accurate proposals based on the analysis of customer documentation.
  • Identify and communicate application-related concerns prior to proposal formulation.
  • Translate customer designs into coherent proposals.
  • Enhance proposed solutions for mutual advantage.
  • Draft effective comments to clarify Powell's offerings.
  • Serve as a technical resource for the sales team.
  • Assist in technical discussions and solutions for sales inquiries.
  • Evaluate subcontractor proposals to complete Powell's offerings.
  • Assess risks associated with subcontractor submissions.
  • Collaborate with other divisions within Powell for integrated solutions.
  • Manage projects with minimal oversight.
  • Potentially lead complex projects involving multiple Application Engineers.
Secondary Duties (as needed):
  • Participate in sales and marketing initiatives, including client meetings and industry conferences.
  • Contribute to cost reduction strategies in partnership with Engineering and Operations.
  • Conduct market research as required.
  • Assist in the development of new and existing product specifications.
Essential Functions:
  • Prepare detailed, accurate, and competitive proposals - 90% of the role.
  • Engage in customer-facing activities - 10% of the role.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in electrical equipment estimation or a similar area.
Skills and Competencies:
  • Strong understanding of electrical theory and industry standards, including IEEE/ANSI, NEC, IBC, and NFPA.
  • Knowledge of low and medium voltage distribution equipment ratings and design principles.
  • Familiarity with DC systems, UPS systems, HVAC, and pressurization techniques.
  • Ability to interpret interconnect, conduit, and cable schedules.
  • Proficient in reading and understanding electrical specifications and drawings.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Customer-oriented approach.
  • Effective time management and prioritization abilities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to acquire new skills and take on additional responsibilities.
  • Proficiency in Visio, AutoCAD, and Inventor software.
  • Competent in Microsoft Office Suite.
Working Conditions:

Environment:
  • Work in a temperature-controlled setting with opportunities for outdoor activities.
  • Occasional travel for training and meetings may be required.
  • Standard office environment involving computer usage and campus travel.
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to maintain stability and agility for various tasks.
  • Capability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
  • Use of hands and fingers for typing and other tasks.
