Job Overview

Additionally, the engineer conducts market research, collects quotes from suppliers and subcontractors, and formulates comprehensive cost estimates and proposals. This role is crucial for maintaining precise budgeting and pricing in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and engineering.

Key Responsibilities:

Primary Duties:
  • Independently assess customer-provided specifications to determine the feasibility of Powell's manufacturing or supply capabilities.
  • Interpret electrical schematics, including single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, elevations, control schematics, and site layouts.
  • Develop accurate proposals based on thorough reviews of customer documentation.
  • Identify and communicate application-related issues prior to proposal creation.
  • Transform customer designs into meaningful proposals.
  • Enhance proposed solutions for mutual advantage.
  • Draft effective comments to specify Powell's offerings.
  • Serve as a technical resource for Powell's sales team.
  • Support technical discussions and solutions for the sales team.
  • Evaluate subcontractor proposals to complete Powell's offerings.
  • Assess risks associated with subcontractor proposals.
  • Collaborate with other divisions within Powell for cross-business solutions.
  • Manage projects with minimal oversight.
  • Possibly lead complex projects involving multiple Application Engineers.
Secondary Duties (as needed):
  • Participate in sales and marketing initiatives, including client meetings and industry conferences.
  • Contribute to cost reduction strategies alongside Engineering and Operations teams.
  • Conduct market research as required.
  • Assist in the development of new and existing product specifications.
Essential Functions:
  • Prepare detailed, accurate, and competitive proposals - 90% of the role.
  • Engage in customer-facing activities - 10% of the role.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Over 4 years of experience in electrical equipment estimation or a similar area.
Skills and Competencies:
  • Strong understanding of electrical theory and industry standards such as IEEE/ANSI, NEC, IBC, and NFPA.
  • Knowledge of low and medium voltage distribution equipment ratings and design principles.
  • Familiarity with DC systems, UPS systems, HVAC, and pressurization techniques.
  • Ability to interpret interconnect, conduit, and cable schedules.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting electrical specifications and drawings.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Customer-oriented approach.
  • Effective time management and prioritization abilities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to acquire new skills and embrace new responsibilities.
  • Proficient in Visio, AutoCAD, and Inventor software.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite.
