Powell Industries, a leading US manufacturer of electrical and electronic equipment, specializes in low- and medium-voltage systems for commercial, industrial, and utility applications. Our extensive product line includes advanced vacuum circuit breakers, monitoring and control electronics, software systems, switchgear, and safety-oriented enclosure systems.

With over 75 years of expertise in vacuum switching technology and arc-flash safety, Powell's products are recognized globally, designed and manufactured across multiple facilities in the US, Canada, and the UK. Our state-of-the-art R&D facilities in the Houston area feature comprehensive prototyping capabilities and UL-certified high voltage and high current laboratories, enabling real-time modeling and validation of your designs.

We are looking for an Electronics Development Engineer to join our Research and Development department. This role involves the design, validation, and technical support of industrial electronic products from initial concept through to full-scale production, as well as ongoing engineering for existing product lines. You will collaborate with manufacturers, clients, and internal teams to ensure successful product development.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and execute plans for the design, validation, and enhancement of industrial electronic products tailored for switchgear applications.
  • Identify and assess alternative electronic components for existing product designs based on general specifications.
  • Oversee validation and certification processes related to the development of industrial electronic hardware.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Work closely with the R&D Manager to establish project plans and ensure the accuracy and quality of deliverables.
  • Collaborate with the R&D Manager to devise strategies for high-volume manufacturing of developed products.
  • Provide ongoing support for existing electronic products, addressing both company and customer needs.
  • Engage in teamwork within the department and across functions to deliver required electronic products.
  • Adhere to company procedures and standards throughout the development process.
  • Continuously update knowledge of emerging technologies to enhance and innovate company products.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned that align with the capabilities of the role.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electronic Engineering or a related field.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in an industrial electronic product development role (advanced degrees and relevant internships may be considered).
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, particularly in technical documentation and presentations.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
  • Membership in a professional society is preferred.
Required Knowledge and Experience:
  • Experience with microcontrollers in embedded industrial applications.
  • Proficiency in analog electronics signal processing.
  • Knowledge of power supply design and power electronics.
  • Understanding of EMI/EMC design principles and testing.
  • Experience with hardware and software integration.
  • Familiarity with electronic mechanical construction and design techniques.
  • Knowledge of electrical switchgear and control systems for industrial power management.
Desired Familiarity:
  • Experience with Altium ECAD tools.
  • Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor.
  • Understanding of RTOS principles and operations.
  • Experience in embedded software development using 'C'.
  • Knowledge of PC-based software development.
  • Awareness of regulatory standards (ANSI, IEEE, IEC).
Working Conditions:
  • Typically involves working in a climate-controlled environment.
  • Physical requirements include communication, manual dexterity, and computer usage.
  • Successful performance of this role requires meeting essential duties satisfactorily.
  • Some work may occur in laboratory and shop environments, with exposure to various elements.
  • Fieldwork may involve exposure to construction sites or active customer facilities.
