Key Responsibilities

As a Heavy Equipment Operator, your responsibilities will encompass, but are not limited to:

  • Operating various types of engineering and construction machinery, including bulldozers and excavators, to excavate, backfill, grade, or level terrain while maintaining and repairing trails, roads, canals, tunnels, dikes, ditches, and other construction site tasks.
  • Executing tasks such as disking, chopping, mowing, rotovating, digging, loading, and leveling to achieve medium and finish grades essential for road shaping and parking lot construction, as well as setting culverts for effective rainwater runoff management.
  • Conducting routine preventative maintenance and performing necessary repairs and adjustments on machinery and attachments.
  • Transporting heavy machinery or loads and maintaining detailed maintenance records for all operated equipment.
  • Utilizing trade skills to perform repairs on facility structures.

  • Wearing the official U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uniform is mandatory.
  • Successful completion of a probationary period may be required.
  • Individuals assigned male at birth must be registered for the Selective Service.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) within six months is necessary.
  • Passing a pre-employment medical examination is required, with potential post-employment evaluations to ensure fitness standards are met.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Pesticide Applicators License may be necessary.
  • Flexibility to work outside of standard hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, may be required.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the requirements set forth by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Handbook X118C, Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupation. While no specific experience, education, or training is mandated, candidates must demonstrate a minimum competency level related to the position and the Assessment Questionnaire to be rated as qualified. To qualify, candidates must meet any screen-out elements at an acceptable level and achieve an average rating of at least acceptable across all elements. Only experience, education, or training acquired before the closing date of this announcement will be considered.

Screen-Out Element: The qualifications will be evaluated against the screen-out element, which typically appears as the first question in the online questionnaire. Applicants who meet the minimal acceptable qualifications will be considered for further evaluation; those who do not will be deemed ineligible.

Final Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Operation of Motor Vehicles.
  • Ability to Drive Safely.
  • Ability to Interpret Instructions and Specifications (including blueprint reading).
  • Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, and Repair.

Experience includes both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer roles through National Service programs and other organizations. All qualifying experience, including volunteer work, will be credited.

Education

No educational substitution is permitted for experience in Wage Grade (WG) positions.
