Key Responsibilities

As a Heavy Equipment Operator, your responsibilities will encompass the following:

  • Operate various engineering and construction machinery, including bulldozers and excavators, to excavate, backfill, grade, or level earth for the maintenance and repair of trails, roads, canals, tunnels, dikes, ditches, and other construction projects.
  • Execute tasks such as disking, chopping, mowing, rotovating, digging, loading, and leveling to achieve medium and finish grades essential for road shaping and proper drainage.
  • Conduct routine preventative maintenance and perform necessary repairs and adjustments on machinery and attachments.
  • Safely transport heavy equipment and maintain accurate records of all maintenance performed.
  • Utilize trade skills to carry out repairs on facility structures.

Employment Conditions

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.

  • Candidates must submit supporting documents for eligibility claims as outlined in the required documents section.
  • Suitability for employment will be determined through a background investigation.
  • Drug Testing: Candidates may be required to undergo drug screening prior to appointment.
  • A valid State driver's license is mandatory throughout employment.
  • Uniform: Compliance with the official uniform policy is required.
  • A probationary period may be necessary for selectees.
  • Registration with the Selective Service is required for individuals assigned male at birth.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) within six months is essential.
  • Medical evaluations may be required to ensure fitness standards are met.
  • Candidates must be able to obtain a Pesticide Applicators License.
  • Flexibility to work outside of normal hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, may be required.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the requirements outlined in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Handbook X118C for Trades and Labor Occupations. While no specific experience or education is mandated, applicants must demonstrate a minimum competency level relevant to the position and the Assessment Questionnaire to be considered qualified.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: The primary qualification will be assessed against the ability to perform the duties of a Heavy Equipment Operator with minimal supervision.

Essential Skills:

  • Proficient operation of motor vehicles.
  • Safe driving practices.
  • Ability to interpret instructions and specifications, including blueprint reading.
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, and repair.

Experience may include both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer service through recognized programs. All qualifying experience will be credited, including volunteer work.

Education

There is no educational substitution for experience in Wage Grade (WG) positions.
