Key Responsibilities

As a Heavy Equipment Operator, your responsibilities will encompass, but are not limited to:

  • Operating a diverse range of engineering and construction machinery, including bulldozers and excavators, to excavate, backfill, grade, or level terrain while maintaining and repairing various infrastructures.
  • Performing tasks such as disking, chopping, mowing, rotovating, and leveling to achieve precise grading for roads and parking areas, ensuring proper drainage and water management.
  • Conducting routine preventative maintenance and executing repairs and adjustments on machinery and attachments.
  • Transporting heavy machinery and maintaining accurate maintenance logs for all operated equipment.
  • Utilizing trade skills to conduct repairs on facility structures.

Employment Conditions

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) within six months is necessary.
  • Selected candidates must pass a pre-employment medical examination and may undergo periodic medical evaluations.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Pesticide Applicators License is required.
  • Flexibility to work outside of standard hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, may be necessary.

Qualifications

By the closing date of this announcement, candidates must meet the qualifications outlined in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Handbook X118C for Trades and Labor Occupations. While no specific experience, education, or training is mandated, applicants must demonstrate a minimum level of competency relevant to the position and the Assessment Questionnaire.

Screen-Out Element: The initial evaluation will focus on the ability to perform the duties of a Heavy Equipment Operator with minimal supervision.

Final Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Operation of Motor Vehicles.
  • Safe Driving Skills.
  • Ability to Interpret Instructions and Specifications.
  • Knowledge of Equipment Assembly and Repair.

Experience includes both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer service through recognized programs. All qualifying experience will be credited, including volunteer work.

Education

No educational substitution is permitted for experience in Wage Grade (WG) positions.
