Role Overview:

As a Teacher of the Visually Impaired, you will engage in a fulfilling educational environment where student needs are prioritized, and your impact resonates globally. You will deliver both direct and consultative vision services to preschool, elementary, middle, and secondary students on our campus. Collaborating with educational teams, you will conduct independent vision assessments and address various aspects of the Expanded Core Curriculum, catering to students who may have additional disabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough assessments of students, collaborating with educational professionals and families to develop tailored Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Provide training and consultation to on-campus educators, ensuring effective communication among team members.
  • Design and prepare individualized lesson plans and materials, maintaining professional standards and necessary documentation.

Essential Duties:

  • Evaluate student records and performance, collaborating with specialists and caregivers to establish goals and objectives aligned with approved curricula.
  • Deliver instruction through various methods, including presentations, discussions, and hands-on activities, to facilitate effective learning experiences.
  • Produce or acquire necessary educational materials, such as Braille or enlarged print, to support student learning.
  • Assess student progress regularly, providing detailed reports in accordance with IEP requirements.
  • Participate in collaborative meetings to contribute to program development and delivery for each student.
  • Maintain communication with families and educational institutions to ensure continuity in individual programs.
  • Recommend future programming goals and objectives for students based on assessments and observations.
  • Encourage the development of positive work habits, health practices, and appropriate levels of independence among students.
  • Establish a structured and disciplined learning environment to promote a positive educational experience.
  • Plan and oversee activities that prioritize student safety and well-being.
  • Design educational programs that reflect current best practices in Special Education, including functional and age-appropriate curricula.
  • Engage with families through various communication methods to maintain strong home-school connections.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required; a Master's degree in Special Education and DESE certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired is preferred.
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR, including AED training, is required.
