Role Overview for the Teacher of the Visually Impaired:

In this position, you will work in an environment where the needs of students are paramount, and your efforts contribute to a global mission. You will flourish in our encouraging and fulfilling workplace. As a Teacher of the Visually Impaired, you will deliver both direct and consultative vision services to preschool, elementary, middle, and secondary students, as well as their educators, on the Perkins campus. Your responsibilities will include conducting independent vision assessments, such as LVE, LMA, and other components of the Expanded Core Curriculum, with some students potentially having additional disabilities.

We are eager to connect with candidates who possess experience in:

  • Conducting student assessments and developing and implementing individualized education plans (IEPs).
  • Providing consultation and in-service training for on-campus educational professionals while fostering communication among team members.
  • Preparing tailored lessons and materials for each student, maintaining professional credentials, and managing paperwork related to evaluations, contracts, reports, and billing.

Key Responsibilities and Expectations include:

  • Reviewing student records, observing and assessing needs, collaborating with other educators and caregivers, and analyzing IEPs to create tailored goals and lessons based on approved curricula.
  • Delivering instruction through various methods, including oral presentations, discussions, demonstrations, hands-on activities, and practical experiences with mobility devices.
  • Producing or sourcing Braille, enlarged print, tactile materials, or assistive devices necessary for student success.
  • Assessing student progress using objective criteria and reporting on achievements in accordance with IEP requirements.
  • Participating in collaborative meetings and contributing to the development and execution of educational programs for each student.
  • Maintaining communication with parents and sending school districts to ensure continuity in individual programs.
  • Recommending future goals and objectives for students and providing written documentation as needed.
  • Encouraging the development of positive work habits, health practices, acceptable behavior, and appropriate independence levels in students.
  • Establishing a structured and disciplined environment to facilitate a positive learning experience.
  • Planning and overseeing activities to ensure student safety and well-being.
  • Designing educational programs aligned with current best practices in Special Education, including functional curricula and community experiences.
  • Maintaining contact with families through home visits or other communication methods, as advised by program supervisors.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required, with a Master's Degree in Special Education and DESE certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired preferred.
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR, including Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training, is required.
