Role Overview:

As a Teacher of the Visually Impaired, you will have the opportunity to work in an environment where student needs are prioritized, and your efforts can have a worldwide impact. You will excel in our supportive and fulfilling workplace. In this role, you will deliver both direct and consultative vision services to preschool, elementary, middle, and secondary students, as well as their educators, on the Perkins Watertown campus. Your responsibilities will include conducting independent vision assessments, including LVE, LMA, and other aspects of the Expanded Core Curriculum, while working with students who may have additional disabilities.

Key Qualifications:

  • Experience in student assessments and the development and execution of individualized education plans.
  • Ability to provide consultation and in-service training for on-campus educational professionals while ensuring effective communication among team members.
  • Skill in preparing lessons and materials tailored to each student, maintaining professional credentials, and managing paperwork related to evaluations, contracts, reports, and billing.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Review student records, observe and assess students, consult with other professionals and caregivers, and evaluate individual education plans (IEPs) to prepare tailored goals and lessons.
  • Deliver instruction through various methods including oral presentations, discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on activities, ensuring engagement with mobility devices and safety awareness.
  • Produce or acquire Braille, enlarged print, oral, or tactile materials and compensatory devices necessary for student success.
  • Assess student progress using objective criteria and report quarterly or as required by IEPs, ensuring timely submission of reports.
  • Participate in collaborative meetings to contribute to the development and delivery of individualized programs and overall program planning.
  • Maintain communication with parents and sending school districts to ensure continuity in individual programs.
  • Recommend future programming goals and objectives for students in writing, including scheduling suggestions when applicable.
  • Encourage the development of positive work habits, health practices, acceptable behavior, and appropriate independence levels in students.
  • Establish a structured and disciplined learning environment to promote a positive educational experience.
  • Plan and oversee activities that ensure the health and safety of students, taking responsibility for their well-being during emergencies.
  • Design educational programs aligned with current best practices in Special Education, including functional curriculum, age-appropriateness, community experiences, integration of related services, and context-based instruction.
  • Maintain regular communication with families through home visits, log books, or other methods as recommended, and keep accurate records for program files.

To Succeed in This Role, You Should:

  • Demonstrate the ability to manage challenging or emotional situations involving student services and respond promptly to student and family needs.
  • Solicit feedback from students and families to enhance service quality and fulfill commitments.
  • Maintain confidentiality while being open to new ideas and approaches.
  • Exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Collaborate effectively as part of a team.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required; a Master's Degree in Special Education and DESE certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired is preferred.
  • Certification in First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is required.

We offer a comprehensive benefits package that prioritizes your well-being, including an employer-contributed retirement plan, tuition reimbursement from day one, professional development opportunities, personal days, paid time off, and paid sick leave.
