Role Overview for the Vision Specialist Educator:

In this position, you will be part of a school community that prioritizes student needs and strives for a global impact. You will flourish in a supportive and fulfilling work atmosphere. As a Vision Specialist Educator, your responsibilities will include delivering direct and consultative vision services to preschool, elementary, middle, and secondary students, as well as collaborating with their educators on the Perkins campus. You will engage with student teams in our Educational Programs, conducting independent vision assessments, including LVE, LMA, and other components of the Expanded Core Curriculum. Some students may present with additional disabilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in student assessments and the development and execution of individualized education plans.
  • Ability to provide consultation and in-service training for on-campus educational professionals while ensuring effective communication among team members.
  • Skills in preparing tailored lessons and materials for each student, maintaining professional credentials, and managing documentation related to evaluations, contract services, reports, and billing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review student records, observe and assess individual needs, consult with generalists, specialists, and caregivers, and analyze individual education plans (IEPs) to formulate goals and lesson plans based on approved curricula.
  • Deliver instruction through various methods, including oral presentations, discussions, demonstrations, hands-on activities, and direct experiences with mobility devices.
  • Produce or acquire Braille, enlarged print, oral, or tactile materials and compensatory devices to assist students in achieving their educational goals.
  • Utilize objective criteria to evaluate student progress, reporting quarterly or as per IEP requirements, and prepare necessary documentation in the prescribed format.
  • Participate in collaborative meetings as a member of the team responsible for developing and implementing educational programs for each student.
  • Maintain communication with parents, sending school districts, and other stakeholders to ensure continuity in individual programs.
  • Recommend future goals and objectives for students' programming in writing and suggest scheduling adjustments when necessary.
  • Encourage the development of positive work habits, health practices, acceptable behavior, and appropriate levels of independence among students.
  • Establish a structured and disciplined environment to maintain order and foster a positive learning experience.
  • Plan and oversee activities to ensure the health and safety of students, taking responsibility for their well-being during emergencies.
  • Design educational programming aligned with best practices in Special Education, including functional curriculum, age-appropriateness, community experiences, integration of related services, context-based instruction, and the Expanded Core Curriculum.
  • Maintain communication with families through home visits, logbooks, or other methods as recommended, and keep accurate records for program files.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required; a Master's Degree in Special Education and DESE certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired is preferred.
  • Certification in First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is required.
