Role Overview for the Educator of Visually Impaired Students:

In this role, you will be part of a school environment that prioritizes student needs, allowing your efforts to have a significant global influence. You will flourish in our encouraging and fulfilling workplace. As the Vision Specialist Teacher, you will deliver both direct and consultative vision services to preschool, elementary, middle, and secondary students, as well as their educators, on the Perkins Watertown campus. Your responsibilities will include conducting independent vision assessments and supporting the Expanded Core Curriculum, with some students potentially having additional disabilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in student evaluations and the creation and execution of individualized education plans.
  • Ability to provide consultation and in-service training for on-campus educational professionals while ensuring effective communication among team members.
  • Skill in preparing tailored lessons and materials for each student, maintaining professional credentials, and managing documentation related to evaluations and services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review student records, observe and assess individual needs, collaborate with other specialists and caregivers, and evaluate individual education plans (IEPs) to develop tailored goals and lessons.
  • Deliver instruction through various methods including presentations, discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on activities, ensuring engagement with mobility devices and safety awareness.
  • Produce or obtain necessary materials such as Braille, enlarged print, or tactile resources to assist students in achieving their educational goals.
  • Assess student progress using objective criteria and provide quarterly reports or as required by IEPs, adhering to program deadlines.
  • Participate in collaborative meetings to contribute to the development and delivery of individualized programs and overall planning.
  • Maintain communication with parents and sending school districts to ensure continuity in individual student programs.
  • Propose future programming goals and objectives for students in written form and make scheduling recommendations as needed.
  • Encourage the development of positive work habits, health practices, acceptable behavior, and appropriate independence levels among students.
  • Establish a structured and disciplined environment to ensure a positive learning experience across various programs.
  • Plan and oversee activities to safeguard student health and safety, taking responsibility during emergencies.
  • Design educational programs aligned with best practices in Special Education, including functional curriculum, age-appropriateness, community experiences, and integrated services.
  • Maintain regular contact with families through home visits or other communication methods as recommended, ensuring accurate record-keeping.

  • Solicit feedback from students and families to enhance services and fulfill commitments.
  • Maintain confidentiality while being open to new ideas and approaches.
  • Exhibit strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Collaborate effectively as part of a team.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required; a Master's Degree in Special Education and DESE certification as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired is preferred.
  • Certification in First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is mandatory.
