Role Summary:

The CFO is tasked with managing all financial operations within the agency. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), this position offers vital accounting, budgeting, operational, and programmatic support across all agency initiatives. The CFO is responsible for supervising the financial and accounting teams and serves as the main point of contact for all contractual negotiations and proposals for new or extended programs. Ensuring robust internal controls to protect the agency's assets and maintaining accounting systems that deliver accurate and timely financial reporting are critical responsibilities. The CFO plays an integral role in the Executive Management Team, contributing to the development and execution of the agency's vision and mission.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establishes Financial Goals: Collaborates with the Management Team and Board of Directors to set financial performance objectives and policies aligned with the agency's strategic plan. Works closely with the CEO to analyze financial variances and develop corrective action plans.
  • Financial Analysis: Reviews and interprets financial statements, including balance sheets and cash flow statements, to assess the agency's financial health and forecast future performance.
  • Budget Preparation: Prepares and presents financial reports and budgets for various programs and services to the CEO and Finance Committee as necessary.
  • Compliance Assurance: Ensures that all financial activities comply with funding source requirements and regulatory standards.
  • Policy Development: Establishes and monitors finance and accounting policies and procedures, providing guidance to staff on financial systems.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Engages with representatives from foundations and organizations to discuss funding requirements and the agency's financial condition.
  • Operational Efficiency: Identifies and implements business process improvements to enhance operational efficiencies.
  • Financial Advisory: Provides financial insights to department heads regarding proposed projects and presents financial information to the CEO and directors to facilitate informed decision-making.
  • Asset Management: Approves purchases and leases of equipment and assets in accordance with financial policies.
  • Risk Assessment: Evaluates operational, financial, and legal risks, recommending appropriate insurance coverage and policy adjustments to safeguard the agency's interests.
  • Collaboration: Works with the Chief Human Resources Officer to analyze employee benefit plans and make recommendations to the Management Team.
  • Audit Coordination: Liaises with independent auditors, presenting candidates to the Finance Committee and overseeing the annual audit process.
  • Team Supervision: Oversees the financial team, ensuring effective management of accounts receivable and collection processes.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Management of financial records, cash flow, vendor relations, payroll, and budget preparation.
  • Preparation of regulatory reports and compliance with grant and contract requirements.
  • Supervision of special projects as directed by the CEO.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in finance or accounting; CPA preferred; MBA is advantageous.
  • Experience: 5-7 years in senior management within a nonprofit organization with significant operational budgets and staffing.
  • Skills: Strong analytical abilities, leadership skills, and proficiency in nonprofit finance and accounting principles.

Technical Proficiency:

  • Expertise in financial systems and internal controls.
  • Thorough understanding of accounting standards and financial reporting.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and nonprofit accounting software.
