Role Summary:
The CFO is tasked with managing all financial activities of the organization. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), this role encompasses providing essential accounting, budgeting, operational, and programmatic support across all agency initiatives. The CFO will directly supervise the financial and accounting teams and act as the primary liaison for all contractual engagements and proposals for new or expanded services. This position is crucial in ensuring robust internal controls to protect the agency's assets and in maintaining accounting systems that deliver precise and timely financial reporting. The CFO will also play an integral role in the Executive Management Team, contributing to the development and execution of the agency's strategic vision and mission.
Key Responsibilities:
- Financial Strategy: Collaborate with the Management Team and Board of Directors to establish financial performance objectives and policies aligned with the agency's strategic plan. Work closely with the CEO to analyze financial variances and formulate action plans to meet targets.
- Financial Analysis: Review and interpret financial statements, including balance sheets and cash flow statements, to assess the agency's financial position and performance.
- Budget Preparation: Develop and present financial reports and budgets for the agency and its programs to the CEO and Finance Committee as needed.
- Compliance Assurance: Ensure adherence to funding source requirements regarding revenues, expenditures, and cash flow.
- Policy Implementation: Establish and oversee finance and accounting policies and procedures, providing guidance to staff on financial systems.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Meet with representatives from various funding organizations to discuss financial requirements and the agency's financial health.
- Operational Efficiency: Identify and implement business process improvements to enhance operational efficiency.
- Financial Guidance: Provide financial insights to department heads on proposed projects and present financial information to the CEO and directors for informed decision-making.
- Asset Management: Approve the acquisition of equipment and assets in accordance with financial policies.
- Risk Assessment: Evaluate operational, financial, and legal risks to the agency and recommend appropriate insurance coverage and policy adjustments.
- Collaboration: Work with the Chief Human Resources Officer to analyze employee benefit plans and make recommendations to the Management Team.
- Audit Coordination: Present independent audit firm candidates to the Finance Committee and liaise with auditors during annual audits.
- Team Supervision: Oversee the controller and accounting staff to ensure effective financial operations.
Qualifications:
- Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; CPA certification preferred; an MBA is advantageous.
- Experience: 5-7 years of senior management experience in a nonprofit organization with annual operations exceeding $5 million and a workforce of over 150 employees.
- Specialized Knowledge: Experience in healthcare billing and collections, capital campaigns, and developing efficient accounting processes is essential.
- Skills: Strong analytical capabilities, excellent communication and leadership skills, and the ability to motivate teams towards shared objectives.
