Position Overview:

The Clinical Practices of the University of Pennsylvania (CPUP) is seeking a Part-Time Clinical Laboratory Specialist to join our Andrology and Endocrine Laboratories.

The role requires availability for every other weekend along with an additional 16 hours during the week.

  • Conducting waived, moderate, and/or high-complexity tests and procedures in clinical laboratory settings under the supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor.
  • Executing requested clinical laboratory analyses on various specimen types, ensuring accurate documentation of laboratory results for disease diagnosis and treatment.
  • Utilizing expertise to perform all routine and complex laboratory procedures for which competency has been established, adhering to all pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical protocols.
  • Monitoring, executing, and documenting all Quality Control, maintenance, and calibration procedures in accordance with established protocols and accreditation standards.
  • Managing the startup, shutdown, and maintenance of laboratory equipment and instruments, taking corrective actions as necessary and documenting all actions taken.
  • Participating in Proficiency Testing and ensuring compliance with testing policies, while assisting in maintaining and updating laboratory documentation required for regulatory reviews.
  • Supporting the supervisor in activities that ensure laboratory compliance with accreditation standards, including annual competency assessments.
  • Demonstrating initiative in enhancing personal knowledge, skills, and departmental efficiency.
  • Fostering a collaborative environment with supervisors and colleagues, maintaining positive relationships with medical staff and hospital personnel.
  • Coordinating the training of new staff and students, performing method validations, and investigating laboratory incident reports as needed.
  • Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work environment, complying with all relevant regulations and notifying supervisors of any hazards.
  • Performing duties in alignment with Penn Medicine’s values, policies, and procedures.
  • Completing other responsibilities as assigned to support the laboratory and health system.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a related biological or chemical field, or equivalent U.S. credentials. Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory methodologies, quality assurance, and proficiency in PC and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).

Additional Information:

Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist by a recognized board or eligibility to take such an exam is preferred. Candidates with current certification as MLS II are encouraged to apply.
