Key Responsibilities

The Clinical Laboratory Specialist plays a crucial role in conducting and overseeing a variety of medical laboratory tests on patient samples to deliver precise results that aid in clinical diagnosis and treatment planning. This position adheres to regulatory standards by following established protocols to ensure a safe laboratory environment and compliance with accreditation requirements.

  • Engages with colleagues, visitors, and other personnel in alignment with the core values of Thomas Jefferson University.
  • Accurately processes specimens in accordance with established protocols for patient identification and labeling. Specimen collection through phlebotomy and venipuncture may be necessary at designated locations.
  • Evaluates the acceptability of specimens through visual inspections, recognizing quality control issues and documenting any unacceptable samples as per policy. Communicates specimen requirements to relevant staff and reports critical values according to hospital protocols.
  • Maintains comprehensive records and documentation of test outcomes by entering and verifying data in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Operates and maintains analytical equipment for laboratory tests, ensuring devices are cleaned, calibrated, and functioning according to manufacturer specifications. Troubleshoots any malfunctions and documents all maintenance activities.
  • Follows established quality control policies and procedures to guarantee the accuracy and reliability of laboratory results. Identifies factors affecting measurements and takes corrective actions as necessary. Participates in proficiency testing programs.
  • Ensures clinical competency by meeting annual regulatory requirements and engaging in educational in-services to comply with accrediting agency standards.
  • Performs additional laboratory technician duties as assigned, including providing technical training and education to fellow technicians and students as requested.
  • Conducts specimen collection via phlebotomy and venipuncture at designated locations as required.

Qualifications

Education: An Associate's Degree in a relevant scientific field is required, preferably from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology program or completion of Military Medical Laboratory specialist training.

Experience: Prior experience in a laboratory setting is preferred, with student training accepted. ASCP or equivalent certification is desirable.

Conditions of Employment: Covid Vaccination is mandatory for employment at Thomas Jefferson University for individuals working in clinical settings. Candidates not currently vaccinated must receive the vaccination prior to their start date unless an approved medical or religious exemption is obtained.
