The Clinical Laboratory Specialist plays a crucial role in conducting and overseeing a variety of medical laboratory tests on patient samples to deliver precise results that aid in diagnosing and treating medical conditions. This professional adheres to regulatory standards by implementing established protocols and procedures to ensure a secure laboratory environment and maintain accreditation compliance. The Specialist collaborates effectively with team members within the department and across other departments to deliver exceptional service through clear communication and teamwork.

  • Engages with colleagues, visitors, and other staff in alignment with the core values of Jefferson Health.
  • Accurately processes specimens by following set protocols for patient identification and labeling. Specimen collection through phlebotomy and venipuncture may be necessary at designated healthcare facilities as required.
  • Evaluates the acceptability of specimens by conducting visual inspections, including recognizing quality control issues related to abnormal or unusual results. Documents any unacceptable specimens in accordance with established policies. Communicates specimen requirements to relevant personnel and reports critical values as per hospital protocols.
  • Generates reports and maintains comprehensive records of test outcomes by entering and verifying data within the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Operates and maintains analytical equipment for laboratory tests. Regularly monitors, cleans, calibrates, and maintains instruments according to manufacturer guidelines and relevant standards. Troubleshoots any malfunctions and initiates corrective measures, keeping detailed records of all equipment checks and maintenance activities.
  • Follows established quality control policies and procedures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of laboratory results. Identifies factors that may influence measurements and takes appropriate actions as per protocols. Adheres to quality control procedures for all testing prior to releasing results and documents quality control outcomes in compliance with regulatory requirements. Participates in proficiency testing programs.
  • Maintains professional competency by fulfilling annual regulatory requirements. Engages in hospital and laboratory training sessions for educational purposes and to comply with accrediting agency regulations.
  • Performs additional laboratory technician responsibilities as assigned by the lead, supervisor, or manager, including providing technical education and training to other technicians and students when requested to meet the criteria established by the educational institution.
  • Conducts specimen collection through phlebotomy and venipuncture at designated healthcare facilities as necessary.
Qualifications

Education: An Associate's Degree in a relevant Science field is required, preferably from an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology program. AND Experience: Prior experience in a laboratory environment (student training is acceptable). ASCP or equivalent certification is preferred.

Conditions of Employment

Covid Vaccination is a requirement for employment at Jefferson Health for individuals working at clinical entities. If not currently vaccinated, candidates must receive the vaccination prior to the hire date unless an approved medical or religious exemption is obtained.
