Position Overview

Title: Academic Support Counselor

Department: Educational Services

Reports To: School Administrator

Job Summary

The Academic Support Counselor will collaborate with students, families, and educational staff to tackle issues related to student well-being and academic success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist students facing behavioral, emotional, or physical challenges by providing counseling and coordinating necessary assessments and interventions.
  • Conduct individual and small group counseling sessions in accordance with tailored educational plans.
  • Respond to crisis situations as they occur, maintaining availability for urgent matters.
  • Offer short-term counseling services to students and their families.
  • Act as a resource for school personnel in supporting student and family needs.
  • Contribute to the development of tailored educational plans, advocating for student interests.
  • Participate in the school's Holistic Support Team to promote comprehensive student care.
  • Educate staff and parents on providing social and emotional support to students.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records for counseling services, documenting sessions and interventions.
  • Provide insights to educators and school leaders on effective strategies for supporting students.
  • Support the implementation of the school's social-emotional learning initiatives.
  • Consult with school staff regarding students not receiving direct services.
  • Design and lead workshops and discussion groups focused on common social and emotional challenges.
  • Evaluate high-risk situations and make immediate recommendations to ensure student safety.
  • Collaborate with families to develop strategies and connect them with external resources for support.
  • Serve as a liaison among students, families, educational institutions, and community resources.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Master's degree in School Counseling or related field required.
  • At least two years of experience in a counseling role within an urban educational environment preferred.
  • Provisional school certification is necessary.
  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish, French, or Creole is advantageous.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Global Community Charter School.
  • Availability to work evenings as required to support student and family needs.
  • Familiarity with social-emotional learning programs is preferred.
