Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Environmental Conservation Specialist to join our team at the Student Conservation Association. As a Natural Resource Management Intern, you will have the opportunity to work alongside officials from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) on projects that help preserve and protect the unique natural resources of the Lake Ontario shoreline.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide information and education to the public on the proper use and protection of natural resources
  • Promote Leave-No-Trace practices and monitor Piping Plover nests
  • Patrol miles of natural beach and notify DEC law enforcement of potential problems and emergencies
  • Perform minor maintenance tasks, such as snow fence repairs and installing or replacing signage
  • Support existing volunteer networks and assist with invasive species mitigation
  • Collect information on user group size and recreation activities to assist the Department in its visitor use monitoring programs
Requirements
  • Ability to work independently and in inclement weather
  • Valid drivers license and access to a personal vehicle
  • Commitment to creating a diverse environment and promoting equal opportunity employment
