Key Responsibilities of the Spiritual Care Counselor I:

  • Assist families and communities through anticipatory grief and post-death bereavement processes. Conduct comprehensive spiritual needs assessments for patients and their chosen families upon admission to hospice services. Act as a liaison to the patient's community of faith.
  • Address the needs of patients and families: Support the clergy or spiritual caregivers involved in the patient’s terminal illness. Foster relationships of care and concern, empowering individuals in their spiritual journeys.
  • Provide an affirming presence to patients, families, and caregivers through non-judgmental listening, advocacy, and focused discussions on spiritual matters. Offer spiritual support and counseling, as well as educational resources on hospice, spiritual care, death and dying, grief and bereavement.
  • For patients and families without religious affiliations, deliver spiritual support aligned with their beliefs and wishes. Accurately document the provision of spiritual care and actively participate in the interdisciplinary care team.
  • Engage with clergy, faith leaders, and spiritual care providers to share information about hospice services. Collaborate with community partners to enhance spiritual and religious support services.
  • Educate patients, families, and caregivers about end-of-life issues, facilitating sensitive conversations in a supportive atmosphere. Contribute to the bereavement program, including making bereavement calls and visits, leading support groups, and maintaining documentation.

Qualifications for the Spiritual Care Counselor I:

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or divinity school is required. Ordination or credentialing by a recognized religious organization is necessary.
  • Completion of three Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) units from ACPE is required; equivalencies may be considered based on professional organization guidelines.
  • Previous experience in hospice care is preferred, along with a minimum of one year of supervised experience in a medical, educational, or religious setting.
  • Ability to provide interfaith spiritual care, demonstrating cultural and theological competence when working with diverse belief systems.
  • Must possess a reliable vehicle, a valid driver’s license, and meet state-required liability insurance standards.
