Position Overview

The Educational Support Facilitator I plays a vital role in assisting educators with the direct supervision and care of children within a classroom or early childhood care setting.

This position is responsible for organizing and preparing educational materials, maintaining attendance logs, health documentation, and student records. Additionally, the facilitator provides instructional support to individual students or small groups.

Summary of Duties

The Educational Support Facilitator I is tasked with providing instructional assistance in general education settings, where activities can be executed by an individual who meets the minimum requirements for educational support.

This role may necessitate completion of 6 semester units. It serves as the introductory level in the career progression.

Advancement to higher levels (II-IV) requires additional coursework, enhanced knowledge, skills, and the ability to work with diverse student populations or specialized projects.

Educational Support Facilitators II typically work with Special Education RSP students, transitioning between special and general education classrooms.

Facilitators at levels II and above also possess the necessary educational qualifications as mandated by federal regulations.

Facilitators III are often assigned to specialized areas such as laboratories or special day classes, where further education or certification is required, along with additional physical demands.

The Educational Support Facilitators IV are trained specialists, frequently in special education, where healthcare skills are essential.

Facilitators V focus on district-wide initiatives and/or specialized subjects such as mathematics, music, or sciences, preparing instructional materials and delivering professional development demonstrations.

It is essential for Educational Support Facilitators to complete a minimum of 48 college transfer credit hours or successfully pass a rigorous academic assessment to comply with educational standards.


Essential Functions

- Collaborates with educators to implement lesson plans, fostering positive learning experiences for children.

- Aids in maintaining classroom order by observing student activities and ensuring discipline. This may include both indoor and outdoor settings.

- Monitors classroom dynamics in the absence of the teacher, accompanying students as needed. Observes and manages student behavior in accordance with established guidelines.

- Provides individualized attention to each child, addressing their unique needs and ensuring equitable support.

- Assists educators with attendance tracking and may communicate with families regarding student attendance.

- Reports any signs of illness or distress in students to the educator and assists in addressing these situations appropriately.

Depending on the assigned grade level, responsibilities may include various infant/child care tasks such as meal preparation, diaper changes, facilitating rest periods, and organizing learning activities.


- Prepares and organizes classroom supplies and equipment as directed.

- May translate educational materials for students, parents, and educators in both classroom and meeting settings.

- Performs clerical tasks including preparation of correspondence, teaching aids, labels, charts, bulletin boards, and displays.


- Undertakes additional duties as assigned that align with the overall objectives of the role.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills:

Basic understanding of age-appropriate child development principles and guidance applicable in an educational context.

Working knowledge of fundamental subjects taught in district schools, including mathematics, language arts, and reading, with sufficient proficiency to assist students in individual or group settings.

Familiarity with teaching methodologies and instructional strategies. Proficient in clerical and record-keeping processes.

Competence in using personal computers, audiovisual equipment, and other tools to support learning and communication.

Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with educators, students, and families in both formal and informal contexts, demonstrating patience and sensitivity to student needs.

Proficiency in a second language may be required.


Abilities:

Ability to assist educators in achieving instructional goals and activities. Capability to assess individual student needs and develop tailored programs.

Ability to interact with educators, families, and specialists to fulfill assigned responsibilities. Competence in overseeing students, administering assignments, and performing general clerical tasks.

Ability to deliver informal presentations to individuals and small groups, assisting with demonstrations of subject matter to larger groups.

Ability to build positive relationships with students in a learning environment, recognizing and respecting socioeconomic and cultural differences.

Ability to balance emotional support with discipline and manage common behavioral challenges.


Physical Requirements:

Ability to perform duties indoors and outdoors, engaging in work that is primarily sedentary to moderately active.

Near visual acuity to read and write printed materials and view computer screens. Hearing and speech abilities for communication in person and over the phone.

Ability to move around the office, classroom, and school grounds to assist with presentations and access materials.

Manual dexterity to demonstrate teaching aids and operate personal computers.

Ability to lift, carry, push, and move supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds intermittently.


Education and Experience:

A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with experience working with students in a classroom or similar environment. Successful completion of a rigorous competency exam resulting in certification, along with completion of 6 college units.

Individuals with 12 or more college credit hours that are degree-eligible will be considered for Educational Support Facilitator II or higher roles.


Licenses and Certifications:

A valid driver's license may be required. Successful completion of an approved competency examination.
