Key Responsibilities of the Spiritual Care Counselor I:

  • Assist families and communities during anticipatory grief and post-death bereavement. Conduct comprehensive spiritual needs assessments for patients and their chosen families upon admission to hospice services. Act as a liaison to the patient's community of faith.
  • Address the needs of patients and families: Support the patient's clergy or spiritual caregivers concerning the patient's terminal illness. Foster caring relationships and partner with individuals on their spiritual journeys, empowering them to utilize their identified strengths and support systems.
  • Provide patients, families, and caregivers with: A supportive presence, empathetic listening, advocacy, and focused discussions on spiritual matters and potential resolutions. Spiritual counseling and support. Education on hospice services, spiritual care, death and dying, grief and bereavement, and related topics to community groups.
  • If patients and families lack religious affiliation, offer spiritual support and services aligned with their wishes and beliefs. Document the provision of spiritual care appropriately. Actively participate as a member of the interdisciplinary care team, contributing to the support of staff. Engage in the development and review of care plans for patients and their families.
  • Network with clergy, faith leaders, and spiritual care providers to disseminate information about hospice services. Collaborate with these partners in the care of patients and families. Contribute to the enhancement of spiritual and religious support services provided by the organization in partnership with community clergy and other members of the hospice interdisciplinary team.
  • Educate patients, families, and caregivers about end-of-life issues and facilitate these discussions in a caring, sensitive environment. Support the bereavement program at the site level, including conducting bereavement calls and visits to provide counseling and support. Facilitate community bereavement support groups and participate in monthly bereavement committee meetings.

Qualifications for the Spiritual Care Counselor I:

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college, university, or divinity school is required. Ordination, credentialing, or commissioning according to the practices of a recognized religious organization or faith tradition is necessary.
  • Completion of three Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) units from ACPE is required; CPE equivalencies may be granted per established guidelines of professional organizations.
  • Previous experience in hospice care is preferred; a minimum of one year of supervised experience in a medical, educational, or religious agency or institution is required.
  • Ability to provide interfaith spiritual care, demonstrating cultural and theological competence in working with diverse faith and belief systems.
  • Compliance with state-specific requirements above minimum education standards is necessary.
  • A reliable automobile, valid driver's license, and the minimum state-required liability auto insurance are required.
