Environmental Assessment Specialist

POSITION OVERVIEW:The Environmental Assessment Specialist plays a crucial role in facilitating environmental evaluations, investigating contaminated locations, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. This position involves preparing necessary permit applications, maintaining records, and providing consulting services related to environmental compliance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist senior personnel in the assessment and remediation of contaminated sites, hydrogeological studies, and environmental risk management initiatives.
  • Follow guidance from senior environmental professionals to enhance skills and work towards becoming an Alaska DEC Qualified Environmental Professional.
  • Collaborate with team members to identify client requirements and formulate proposals, including scope, budget, and timelines.
  • Contribute to the development of technical documentation, including reports and cost estimates.
  • Engage in routine administrative tasks.
  • Lead field assessments (Phase I/II/III ESA) and compliance inspections.
  • Conduct research, gather resource data, and prepare various regulatory applications and documents.
  • Adhere to company and client policies and procedures.
  • Promote a culture of safety and take personal responsibility for safe practices in all activities.
  • Perform additional duties as required by the organization.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School diploma is mandatory.
  • Ability to work extended hours in remote conditions, typically lasting 2-3 weeks.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite.
  • A minimum of 4-6 years of experience in environmental assessments or regulatory permitting, with at least 2 years in Alaska.
  • Must be an Alaska DEC Qualified Sampler.
  • Familiarity with North Slope Red Book waste management guidelines is required.
  • Must be able to travel to designated locations at personal expense.
  • A valid Driver's License is essential.

Certifications (Training provided by the company within 3 months of hire):
  • North Slope Training Cooperative (NSTC) safety training certification.
  • OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hour certification.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A Bachelor's degree in environmental science, chemistry, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Experience with the Alaska Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (APDES) and oil spill response planning is advantageous.
  • Experience in conducting environmental assessments and remediation for federally funded projects is a plus.
  • Understanding of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is preferred.
  • Experience in the oil and gas sector on the Alaska North Slope is beneficial.
