The Environmental Specialist position plays a crucial role in assisting the Environmental Program Manager by applying expertise in environmental laws and standards. This role encompasses the management of program development, execution, oversight, and evaluations at various operational sites.

This position is primarily based in Anchorage, Alaska, with the possibility of remote work for qualified candidates. The role requires significant on-site presence at operational locations throughout the year.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the creation, execution, and maintenance of the Environmental Program across all operational aspects.
  • Assist management in ensuring that operations comply with environmental regulations and safety standards.
  • Oversee and evaluate environmental health and safety compliance initiatives.
  • Develop and implement best practices to enhance environmental operations.
  • Conduct thorough environmental assessments and audits.
  • Prepare and submit environmental reports as required by government contracts.
  • Review and coordinate responses to environmental compliance reports issued by regulatory agencies.
  • Update and refine environmental procedures and operational guidelines.
  • Design training programs to fulfill environmental and safety requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to environmental protocols for a secure working environment.
  • Implement monitoring strategies for waste management and water quality.
  • Maintain comprehensive records to demonstrate compliance with environmental standards.
  • Address environmental issues and serve as a liaison with regulatory bodies.
  • Compile reports on incident management and conduct root-cause analyses.
  • Communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats.
  • Recommend and acquire necessary personal protective equipment and resources.
  • Participate in collaborative discussions and uphold a strong work ethic.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently, manage stress, prioritize tasks, and accept constructive feedback.
  • Foster a positive work environment and undertake additional responsibilities as needed.

Qualifications

Essential Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental compliance, preferably within the defense sector.
  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
  • Willingness to travel to various project sites for extended durations and work effectively in remote settings.
  • Ability to obtain necessary certifications as mandated by regulatory authorities.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Certifications in Hazmat shipping (IMDG, IATA, DOT).
  • Qualifications as a Certified Asbestos and Lead Inspector, among others.
